Gear Linkage Bolt

Recommended Posts

On a resent rally the gear linkage bolt came undone and left us stranded. I am now thinking of tack welding said bolt or would it be better to try loctite it? Has anyone else come across this problem? This is on a 1900 gti using a 1600 box.

The one thats got a cap on it i think it 17 or 19mm. When it came undone the gear leaver just flooped around and left me stuck in 4th.

The big one (21 or 22mm IIRC) on the subframe which holds "L" leaver ?

Well , mine loosens up a bit as well from time to time  but never completely so that the whole leaver/selector system falls off ..

Heat from the exhaust might be the reason for this (that's for the cap on top on the screw) , i usually just nip up the screw a bit from time to time when i feel that the gear leaver becomes kinda sloppy .. but no reason you shouldn't try with some threadlocker B) there's various strength types and they're chemical/solvent resistant , though , i'm not sure about the temp. resistance (check Loctite or Permatex pdf's for more detail..)

.. anyway , should work me thinks B)

I would only use threadlock on it personally, what may help a lot is to get a bush kit from Stew at BBM, its a pair of bronze top hat bushes with a ground sleeve and a replacement bolt instead of the plastic bushes and large shanked original items.

should remove a lot of play from the linkage and prove reliable.
