205 Gti Ecu Temp Sensor Question

Recommended Posts

Hi been having fuel problems with my F Reg 205 Gti 1.6 and replaced the ECU temp sensor but still have problems, today i removed the plug to the sensor and the car stalled i left it off and tried to start the car but no go connected it back up and car run again so my Question is should the car still run with the sensor disconnected or do i have a problem?

A friend of mine told me to bypass the SAD and disconnect the ECU temp sensor and the fuel problem will be solved only problem then would be it would not tick over until hot then it will be fine he said his is set up this way but i cant see how that is possible if the car wont run with the sensor disconnected.

I will be asking more questions about my fuel problem soon i think but for now i am trying to test as much as i can before i ask any questions.

that is quite right that it'll stall with the plug disconnected, the ecu will dump a hell of a lot more fuel in, to the point of flooding.

It'll run with the SAD disconnected, only at a higher rpm for a little longer, though due to how they work the RPM will drop eventually as the engine warms through.

Usually they do not run with the temperature sensor disconnected though no.

Thanks for clearing that up the plan was to run the car with them disconnected and see if it got better on fuel as 32 miles to £10 is not good already changed the SAD and its got a new ECU temp sensor but will not stay running when cold and drinks fuel, been looking at posts on the forum all night and have some things to try and if all fails i will start a post and try and get help.

I have had the car for 10 years but its getting close to me selling it as its driving me mad and i cant afford to keep running it like this.

IMO a problem like that is likely to be caused by a few things rather than just one duff sensor.

I would do the following work:

Check all electrical connections for broken wires and corrosion (most likely culprit IMO)

Try a different AFM

Clean out the throttle butterfly and check it is still firmly attached

Check the throttle cable and position switch (switch should click on and off with just the slightest movement of the peddle/cable)

Check the Dizzy connections, vacuum unit and hose

Check HT leads and plugs

(Will have a look at these)

Try a different AFM

(Have tried one but was off a J Reg should i get one from an F Reg?)

Clean out the throttle butterfly and check it is still firmly attached

(Have a spare one and have just cleaned it with carb cleaner will fit it soon)

Check the throttle cable and position switch (switch should click on and off with just the slightest movement of the peddle/cable)

(Will get my mechanic to do this for me soon)

Check the Dizzy connections, vacuum unit and hose

Think the vacuum is ok but there was a problem with the wires and my mechanic repaired them am looking for a new one but cant post wanted adds here yet)

Check HT leads and plugs

(Have replaced plugs, leads, cap and rotor arm)

I have a question with the throttle body the one on my car has no air outlet on the top (goes to the oil filler) but the one i have cleaned came off a J Reg and has the air outlet on, every Gti i have looked at has the air outlet so my question is could this be part of the problem and is one off a J Reg ok to go on my F Reg?

One other thing the coil is not in the best of condition could this be part of the problem and if so what is the best replacement as i have been reading on the forum Pug's are fucy about what parts are used.

Thanks for the reply

Scotty
