Help Car Not Starting

Recommended Posts

ok decided to take of the sad today to see if it would fix the starting issue luckily my sad wasn't even attached to on its bracket just hanging so just unplugged the connector (noticed the connector was blue going in sad and a black one in coolant bit above sad), read on here the blue connector should be for ecu temp sensor and black for sad, anyway pulled of the air hoses and gave the sad a good clean put everything back put black connector on sad and blue on coolant temp sensor. I got the battery and decided to check the black fuse box i read about it had 2 25amp fuses in it and low and behold 1 of them had blown cool i thought maybe this is the starting problem  went to halfords got 2 25amp bladed fuses returned put both new 25amp fuses in but battery back connected positive then went to connect negative and there was quite a lot of sparking and also some smoke put it on went to start car and its just turning over all time and will eventually try to fire but very lumpy and revs wont go over 1k and also have to hold starter button in if i let it go car just dies anyway thought about the fuses went to have a look and both of them had popped  so got original good 25amp fuse and put it in original place tried starting again and still doing same thing  then i noticed the battery was dying as started turning over very slow and lights were diming, could the problem be battery needs charging why it wouldnt fire properly?

awsome looks like i fixed the starting problem i found a lose orange wire and guess where it had come from pulled out the ecu temp sensor :( i have bodged it back in and put electricians tape around seems to hold ok but need a perm fix (anyone got a spare connector?) :) anyway it started start up :) but did notice quite a lot of blue smoke from exhaust never did this before well not as much abit after about 5-10min blue smoke sempt to go away, any explanation for this? also i think its running very rich cause its popping and banging like mad!! just rev it to 3k and pop over 3k ever louder sounds like a rally car... :( i know running rich isn't good but its better than lean i suppose :) also it doesn't seem to be using any oil from what i can see check oil cap no crap or anything :(

my concern is the blue smoke though now i had the ignition advanced slightly i retarded it back to original position will that help with running abit rich?

need to get a health check on engine really... hopefully tom fenton on here is gonna help me out ;)

people ignoring me or cant be bothered to reply :( anyway the blue smoke can this be caused by a very bad setup on the breather side of things as my breather system has seen better days the pipe is split and have put tape around it and they are very squashed surely it can't help... also recently put some spark plugs in ngk ones BCP6RE as these i took out originally but in halfords these list the 6RE for cat model 205s and the 7ES for non-cats i am not sure if my gti is cat or non cat it was originally a 1.6 1990 but had a 1.9 engine db6 put in.

Im no expert but i know those breather hoses need sorting as i have been having problems with my 205 Gti, I was told the breather hoses are very important and i don't think 1990 has a cat fitted.

well just been for a drive to fuel station and its so much smoother now ;) don't know if its the fact i cleaned the sad out or the fact the sad and ecu temp connections were on wrong but its a lot better not half as much kangarooing now but it still defo needs a good tune imo  although on way back from fuel station only about 10min away it started sounding like a lawn mower engine was thinking wtf and was down on power got it home round back of my flat lifted bonnet first thing i noticed was a very nice display of sparks coming from the dizzy... yes 2 of the ignition leads were hanging down of dizzy very nice display of sparks though  guess i was only running on 2 cyclinders! connected back and secured better flys again now :P but my popping and banging seems to have calmed down now not as bad major let down

yeh i would think a 1990 gti would have no cat so it might be worth me putting the 7ES plugs in instead of the 6RE, would it make any difference?

well been to tom fentons and he done me a compression test and got like 200psi across all cyclinders so thats good i guess ;) was told blue smoke most probably valve stem oil seals so will have to get that done sometime. Just got to get this starting issue sorted a lot of things need replacing though dizzy, fuel filter and some general tlc. :)

thanks to tom again and sorry for being late :)

If it was overfueling for a while due to the disconnected ECU temp sensor it might have diluted the oil with petrol and thinned it out. Its worth changing the oil and filter before you change the stem seals.
