Xs 1990 Exhaust For Rallying

Recommended Posts

I'm preparing my XS for stage forest rallying. The standard exhaust is totally shot. Is it worth getting it replaced with a powerflow or longlife? or is the standard suitable?

Thanks

Mike

You will get no power gains from modified systems really, We just used a 1.1 pipe as it had no centre box to get ripped off.

Yep 1.1 pipe will do, as its cheap and light. only real gain is from a 4 branch manifold really.

OK excellent. Mine is the pre cat model? Will I still need the 1.1 exhaust?

Cheers

It fits all TU engined 205's even ones with cats, so you can decat it.

Took my XS in to a local garage today, I spoke to the guy about fitting a 1.1 pipe as I'm using it for motorsport and I want to avoid having a box. His manual showed that the TU3S has no box.

He put it up on the ramp and we both had a look, he was right, no box at all!

So I'm just going to get the same standard system fitted. Quoted £170 inc vat and fitting for manifold, downpipe (that has a u-bend under the steering rack) centre pipe (no box or cat) and backbox.

Thanks,

Michael

Just had a look HERE, and so it does seem that the XS should not have centre box! Which is strange as my old J reg XS had a centre box on it. It also says that the GT (which is basically a 5 dr XS) does have the centre box. :)

emissions laws changed in 1992, yours could have been a late J-plate which would explain the centre box.

and i cant remember whats under my GT!

Wow that loads of money! Why do you want to replace the system?

Just remembered, my J reg XS was a bit of an odd one. It was badged as an XT originally, but still came with the TU3S engine on a carb. So that would explain the centre box I reckon. Can't even remember if there was a centre box on my G plate XS or not

I think some of the pattern exhaust systems dumped the centre box and had a larger rear box. Certainly the XS I broke didn't have a centre box however it had an enormous rear silencer!

Indeed. All of the cars with a TU3S engine would have originally left the factory with a centre box, the fact that some now don't have one probably means it's had a cheap replacement sometime in it's life!

my old h plate xs and my current g plate xs both HAD centre box's replaced with 1.1. ive replacet the back with an omp stainless 2 1/4 inch intended for a 307 and made it fit. it sounds awesome and not too loud. had to weld skids to it as it is quite large but suprisingly light. next job is to cut, weld and fit a 4 branch for a vtr, will try to mate it up to my downpipe. all good! also fitted my weber dgv today, also sounds great. fitting linkage tomorrow then road test.!! woop woop
