Rebuilding 1.9 Calipers....

Recommended Posts

grantley1988

I have had the 205 a few weeks now and originally i had planed to tackle the suspension first, but seeing as that department is fine for the very near future. I am going to start on the brakes first as they could be alot better!

I will be fitting a gti6 engine around june time (have two weeks holiday for the world cup :) ) It will be rebuilt with cams to start.. throttle boddies soon after.. The car is my everyday driver so i do not think i need 4pots.

Are 1.9 calipers guna have enough stopping power for the gti6 engine? I do not really want to upgrade to gti6 calipers. Had these on my saxo and although gave better stopping power, I did notice that turn is was not as great and steering was alot heavier.

Im planing on fitting mintex discs, ferrodo DS2500 pads, 5.1 fluid and braided lines. My main concern is that i have no history on whether the calipers have been replaced or rebuilt at all. I have never rebuilt calipers and would not no how to tell if mine need rebuilding??

Can anyone let me no if this is a hard job to do? Do i need any specialist tools? Or even better someone can do this job for me or have a rebuilt set for sale :)

Thanks

Not got very far with mine yet as I've been way too busy with other things (clicky for my thread) but it doesn't look too difficult so far. I will update when I start to get somewhere!

I'd check with your insurer whether they will want you to upgrade your brakes from standard with the new powerplant.

Front calipers are easy peasey, rear calipers are a fair bit harder to do depending on how far you go with them.

Only thing I can think of from a specalist tools point of view, is its handy to have an airline to force the piston out. You can of course take the pads out and press the brake pedal untill they pop out but its the messier option  Dont forget brake fluid is a good paint stripper either.

Watch out for corrosion or scoring on the pistons, they are scrap if they have any.

This place will come in handy for you:

Alternatively Ive seen factory 'reconditioned' calipers (new really, pretty much) on ebay for under £40 a caliper.
