Is This Normal?

hi all, i recently moved the camshaft pulleys on my mi16 engine seperatly of one another,(as stated in my other posted didnt know i couldn't do this without damage)

camblet was removed and timing hole was slightly out on inlet so decided to line it up wnet to far and done a whole revolution to time it back up, now i've found out i could of possibly bent a valve/s

Put cambelt back on to day, went to turn engine over by hand to check timing and crank would not turn what so ever.

Was told by a local mechanic that i have indeed bent a valve.

Took the head off the block today and it looks a little messy, but im no expert.

Looking at these pics can someone give me some advise as to what is up with my engine, also do i have to pop out each valve to find the bent one or can i go get a leak down test to find out?

Its hard to tell by the pics if the valves are bent. It does look however like you have had a lot of moisture in the cylinders judging by the rust on the pistons. SO probably best you have taken the head off. The try turning the cams with a spanner now the engine is removed to see if the valves all operate. A good test for them not seating properly is to whip the cam out. Turn the head upside down and fill each of the combustion chambers in the head with petrol. If it leaks through quickly you have a big problem. If it stays for 24hrs should be okay.

Some more pics of the valves would help

Steve

looks like its been sat for some time with a blown headgasket, notably cylinder 2, 1 as well looks a bit cleaner than the others.

the engine not turning over may have been due to the rings rusting to the bores, not the end of the world if the bores clean up and aren't excessively worn, but I would change the rings personally.

it is best practice to strip each valve out to check them, don't force any though, as the tops of the stems can mushroom ever so slightly over time, this will damage the guides if not addressed, I would rub down the sides of the top of the valve stem if they don't drop out with finger pressure.

often enough you wont be able to see if a valve is bent, so may be best to get assistance from a cylinder head specialist.

the left hand piston has definate marks where a valve has touched. that valve would be my first for a closer inspection.

the engine has been sat for about 12-13 months in a garage that had a leak, i found that water had been dripping by the engine where it was stored, wasn't happy with where it was so i have a new dry garage now,

Below are some pics of when the head gasket failed and what the pistons looked like before the moisture got into the block

Just to note the car hasn't been run in the time between the photos shown. below are photos of when head gasket went and my first post shows pics of as rallysteve suggests which looks like moisture/water entering the bores

If you turn just 1 cam a full revoloution you will of bent valves imo.

This is because the other cam will still be holding valves open and these will of made contact with the valves you opened when you rotated the other cam.

that is a smart 205 - good luck saving it!

seems that you've got some work to do sorting that engine out. i've seen worse tho!
