Knackered Jacking Points

Recommended Posts

dino20vt

Jacking the 205 up today to refit the exhaust and really noticed how knackered the jacking points are.

What's are my options?

Anyone happen to be a decent welder and willing to travel to Leicester?

Or any recomendations?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

This is the n/s rear jacking point, easily the worst as it collapsed around the axle stand.

I've not done much metal work before so excuse the wording....

Would it be possible to remove the rusty bit in the middle, replace the missing bit, form some sheet metal into a narrow 'U' shaped piece approx six inches in length, place over the repaired sill then weld on the inside and out????

Ie this shape

I would be a little suspect of what the rest of the sill is like, by the looks of is to do a proper repair you may end up replacing a large section.

Personally I would buy some sill sections and a spot welder. I wouldn't patch.

For it to do that the rust must be fairly well set in, I'd see how far it speads first before making any plan's.

oz.

I don't use the jacking points on the sills any more, after seeing how weak they were. I only use the subframe and the rear beam as jacking points now.

To be fair, up until the axle stand incident I never had any reason to suspect the sills were past their best as it's a real solid shell, inner wing area is spotless, as is the boot floor, rear quarter/sill join, inside the door below the air vent and under the carpet. i'll be taking a little more notice now!

Are complete or sections of sills still available? If so are they astronomical?

I hope you're wrong but we'll see fairly soon as the tank needs swapping due to a hole.

I wish I hadn't either, won't be in the future though.

Anything will repair given time, that's nothing compared to some mk1 escorts that are being done!Needs doing properly though incase a garage in the future jacks it up there. All the outer section needs cutting out first to asses the damage to the inner sill and then go from there.
