Help Needed Removing Drive Shafts

help needed ! sorry if it has been covered but have tried the search engine and not had any luck. i am trying to remove my drive shafts to change the engine am a complete novice and strugling to remove the drivers side drive shaft from the spline and can't make sense of the haynes manual. any recomendations of how to get it out? it said about locking the other side with an inch dowel. any help would be great cheers

1- Crack off hub nut 32mm/ 35mm

2- Undo hub/strut bolt (16mm)

3- Undo x2 11mm nuts on intermediate bearings and twist the bolts so the lugs both point outwards.

4- Get a container to catch any oil

5- Open up the back of the hub by sliding an 8mm allen key in the slot and twisting through 45degs

6- Knock the hub off the strut with a hammer

7- Pull out the shaft from the hub.

8- Hammer and drift -smack the shaft from where it enters the intermediate bearing and it will pop out.

Have you undone the two 'Hockey stick' bolts that go through the lower mount casing? Just loosen them so you can turn them thru 180 degs, it may take a little gentle persuasion for the shaft to become unstuck.

thats brilliant thanks for the fast reply will try that later far easier to follow than the haynes manual. no i havn't yet undone the hockey stick bolts although i think one of them is allready loose which isn't good. will try that now cheers for the help. also it seems getting the engine and box out of the bottom is the way to do it. can it be lifted out the top with the box still on?

Yes it comes out the top just fine but you need a load leveler ideally and hoist.

thats just what i wanted to hear cheers for that. the hoist is ready and waiting just need to get the driveshaft out and were lifting. thanks again

When removing my old 1.9 unit and after realeasing the two 'cheese bolts' (can be called by other names) the shafts just lifted out, no need for hammers!

You were lucky then as the majority of the time they need some persuasion.

The driver side shaft can be very hard to remove if you have dropped the gearbox at all, I find it best if the driveshafts are the first thing that you remove. If the shaft still won't budge out of the intermediate bearing then you can always remove the bearing housing from the back of the block :lol:

Oh, and you also don't need to remove the hub, though it does make thing easier; and you're less likely to split a boot or shatter the speedo cog/drive (though I think you have to be doing something stupid to manage either of these)

 

Mine have nearly always needed at least a slight tap with a hammer as well, I think the only time they didn't was when I'd only driven about 100 miles since I'd last worked on them.
