Christ, where to start with what points a 20 year old French car commonly fails an MOT on?

Bulbs are common, particularly in my experience the rear foglamp and the rear numberplate lights

Front washer motor not working, or the washer jets blocked up

Rear brake effort on 1.9 GTi's thanks to failed rear brake compensators

Corroded brake pipes, particularly around the fuel tank

Play in the wishbone bushes and balljoint/hubs

Emissions, normally just needing a tweek of the mixture screw on the AFM

Headlight alignment

Naturally, they're all old enough that they can fail on just about anything if it's not be maintained properly in the past - the above are all common though.

Some more common ones:

- CV Boots

- Exhaust blowing

- CV Boots

- Seats insecure

As Tony said, these can fail on anything now. They are old.

I would Jack the car up, have a right good look and poke about at EVERYTHING, press every switch, waggle every joint....

Spend a good few hours fiddling with it and it will go through.

MOT is all about common sense.

ha ha the two inner cv boots are leaking but they should wipe up just before it goes theyr not to bad, as for the body its unbelivably solid,

will spend some good time doing some shakey shakey wigly wigly though cheers mate.

check the blatantly obvious, drive down there with the handbrake on after an Italian tune up and see how many red and orange sheets you come away with :D

1.6 or 1.9? The reason I ask is that I always have problems with the rear calipers on my 1.9 seizing up...
