Safety Devices C44 Roll Cage Fitting

Recommended Posts

davidc

We're in the process of fitting a Safety Devices C44 cage.

The car will be used for rallying & is being buit to RAC MSA regs.

When fitting the rear cage, the rear stays mount to the rear beam bolts on the floor. As stated in the RAC MSA Blue Book, there should be 120 square cm's of 3mm thick steelplate welded to the shell where the feet are mounted. As with the back stays, there is already a bracket welded to the cage that would meet this requirement.

Do I need to plate this area ? Has anyone else done this ? Any pics of what you've done ?

The main hoop & front legs are no problem, its just the rear ones.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

David

I have the same cage, but as it was fitted when I bought the shell im not sure if you need more plating. It is worth mentioning though that the original challenge car build manual shows reinforcement plates should be welded on the underside of the floor for these rear feet.

As you say the plating's already there on the bottom of the cage, and it mounts to the rear beam mountings anyway, which is a strong point anyway. Pretty certain you don't really need to add anything, as if you did it'd either raise the cage height, which already is a snug fit, or raise the ride height, depending on which side of the shell you add the plating.

I've never seen plates added for the rear stays on the C44, and certainly my ex-challenge car doesn't have any.

Thats the one......I think I'll just leave the plating & see how it goes.

Im plating in the main hoop & front legs so that should do the trick & keep the scrutineers happy !!

Baz,

What does the fitting kit consist of ?

The only plates I got were the ones for the main hoop which are now fitted.

Cheers,

David
