Compression Test

Recommended Posts

si-mi16

hi all, can i do a compression test by turning the engine over by hand?

reason i ask is i have done something rather stupid(didn't know at the time of doing so)

With the cam belt removed after snapping a water pump bolt, i lined up the timing holes on cam pulleys seperatly. Now im aware i could have bent atleast a couple of vavles.

Am going to be putting belt back on asap once i have the required bolts, but will turning the engine over by hand be enough to measure the compression?

?

You won't get any compression on one/two cylinder/s if you have bent valves.

Think you need to crank the engine over using the starter motor to do a compression test.

What engine? This would help for starters.

Get the cambelt on, turn it over by hand to make sure nothing clashes and everything moves freely. Remove spark plugs to stop compression messing you about.

sorry paul 13 its a mi16 engine ali block.

so im going to have to get the engine back in the car and crank off the starter motor/ignition to do a compression test. I might add that previous to me snapping the water pump bolt, i had the head skimmed and pressure tested and all was ok. but since rotating the cam pulleys independently and reading that this should be done, im worried that some valves maybe be bent  ( no that im homeaphobic)
