Anyone ever experienced this? My GTi just isn't keen on actually taking petrol into the fuel tank, is quite happy to burn it, mind you :D but isn't that keen on filling up? Constantly vomits up jamjars full of the stuff at the pumps...

Mine did this when I first got it, I find it's all in the technique of filling up twisting it slightly.

Its all in the wrist!

Pain in the ass huh. Espicially when it drips on your lovely arch trim and stains it almost white :D

the breather is blocked. its the smaller pipe that runs in parrallel with filler and comes back up to the filler neck. iirc theres also a little non return valve in there which is possibly the cause, but it's been a while, so don't quote me on the nrv, or anything for that matter :D

Good point actually, splurts would be what I said...... 'jamjar's' on the other hand is almost certinally what Pugnut said :P

Yeah, what pugnut said.

Mine did this, i actually got soaked with unleaded with my last 205, current one isn't so bad. I find it helps if you use a certain technique, like pulling out the hose occasionally while filling to let the air escape, and sometimes tilting the pump helps. I stand behind the car when filling up now, as the idea of accidently being set on fire doesn't particularly appeal.

to refresh my memory i just run out to the garage to check, as i though i might be thinking about some other vehicle, but yes the nrv arrangement is part of the cap, dont know if theres much fixing in it, but theres also a short breather pipe that runs down the inside of the arch toward the rear of the car. An easy check would be to see if that is clear and that theres no winter crud blocking it, as its open ended.

there are two breathers, the filler breather which is approximately a 1" hose and terminates in the filler cap and the smaller 1/4" one which is the one that routes through the cap and out , and would be for normal running as the tank slowly drops. I think the only way it would be a breather, is if the larger 1" hose had colapsed or split and blocked up with crap in the wheel arch, and i've never heard of this happening. worth checking, but otherwise just adjust your technique.

I get a couple of drips if i fill at full bore, i sort of ram it in and twist quarter of the way to the side.

I might try this technique with the old girl next time I get a chance....

I'm getting this problem at the min. I've had my 205 for roughly 10 years and always filled it up the same way. Recently though I've started reusing it after nearly 2 years off the road and if I pull the trigger on the nozzle fully it's like a petrol fountain after 30 seconds. I reckon it covers a distance of about 18 inches out of the filler hole. As it has been parked up for two years it has to be a blocked breather surely?

trouble is, if you put your finger down the filler you will feel the filler breather. this needs to be clear to allow the tank to fill. if the nozzle isn't in far enough , or in the wrong orientationyou are pushing petrol down it also. I haven't filled up a 205 in about 18 months , but distinctly remember you need to twist the nozzle to get far enough down to clear the breather. if you still get splurge after doing this then there may be a problem with the breather, but it's a long shot.

check inside the wheel arch and check the 1" hose that runs along with the main filler is present and correct.you could try and push something down the breather from inside the filler, but the chances of that being blocked without anything obvious from the outside is about nil.
