Hub Carrier/wishbone - Change Both At Once?

Recommended Posts

mattmalden

Hello,

I've a nasty knock from the front. On inspection I can see play around the wishbone balljoint - so I over-tightened the clamp nut. 35newton metres is the reccomended torque - why so low? No wonder it ovals!

Things got better for all of 2 days, then the banging started again..

So I'm pretty sure I've got an oval hole in the hub carrier/sterring knuckle.

I'm heading to the scrappy to raid the 205 gti. I'm going to nab both wishbone and knuckle but my question is should I take them off one by one or can I leave them coupled for removal and subsequent re-fit?

I'd imagine coupled together is fine, nay better. But before I go and make a mess i thought it best to ask.

Cheers!

Matt.

pain in the arse to remove and fit as one unit, I would separate personally, and use a new bolt and a torque wrench :o

Cheers Welsh, I'll try as a pair but not too hard thanks to your advice.

New bolt?? Which one - or do you mean replace all of them? Is that so the correct torques can be attained?

Thanks,

Matt

But if it's knocking then it needs to be tightened doesn't it? Or is the root cause that the pin reduces in diameter so it is the pin / balljoint that needs replacing?

Either way 35 newtons is very low. I thought the ball joint was the bit designed to 'give' - therefore what harm in tightening the clamp as much as possible?

the harm you cause by over tightening the bolt is to stretch and weaken the clamp.

if its knocking its knackered.
