Feels Like Kick Down

Recommended Posts

Weser

Hi all,

My 1.9 gti no cat J reg has developed a problem. Annoyingly it doesn't do it all the time!

You can be driving along say in 4th at 40mph and then put your foot down and nothing. The after a couple of seconds off it goes just like kick down in an auto. Sometimes it can take as long as 7secs.

It doesn't matter if you put your foot to the floor or push it down slowly, there is still a pause. Feels like a jump. Its useally a long pause if you put your foot to the floor though.

Im out of ideas now and its making it a bit undrivable. However I hadn't driven it for a week and jumped in it the other day and it ran well. Any help would be much appreciated

Also its really jumpy and juddery down low revs when its cold but I take it this is normal? The other day it turned over for ages until it started so I don't know if that has anything to do with it but it hasn't done it again since. I think this is down to the dodgy fuse box it has in it.

Please Help!

Cheers

Andy

Anyone shed some light on this problem?

I would really appreciate the help.

Even if it is just to check some basics I would love to know a place to start.

What fuel do you run your car on?

It could be a slow to respond (dying) AFM or dead throttle switch at WOT.

Tests for both of these items can be found in the Haynes manual but how old / good quality are things like the HT leads. plugs, dizzy cap & rotor arm?

I think the 205 GTI is paarticularly fussy with regards to the quality of the dizzy cap & arrm so if you have any questions on the history of these parts, replace them with good quality (motaquip & NGK plugs) ones imo.

Graham.

mine's started to do something similar over the past couple of weeks, I was putting it down to a problem in the fuel supply...

Another job for Mr Fenton, the next time he has my car me thinks....

I use normal petrol not the premium exspensive stuff. Is this really bad? never had a problem on other cars?

It does happen more on full throttle so i thought it could be the switch. I have adjusted the AFM as it was running really rich. Maybe I will try putting this back. Although it has been like this for a while and the problem has only just started.

I have serviced it not to long ago so I doubt it is the fuel filter.

I'm pretty sure it has the original dizzy and leads on as it has supposedly only done 23,000 miles so that might be the first thing to do is there a particulally good make or just get some new ones.

If there is no luck here i will try testing the AFM and Throttle switch.

Do people think this is a good plan?

Have you tested the alternator when revving the engine etc?

I used to have really strange problems caused by a dodgy alternator, I could of sworn 110% it was a fuel problem. It would charge on idle but around 2500rpm and 6000rpm it would keep cutting out and then go back to normal when the revs calmed down.

Sounds good though what you said above, just do things in a logical order and you'll find the fault.

Depending when this (kick down effect) is happening it could be classic fuel starvation - if it pretty much always happens shortly after a sweeping right hand bend then the cure is to always keep it at more than half-full or more expensive mods like fit a swirl pot. But your other symptoms definitely suggest another problem as above ^^
