Starting Problem Annoying Now

Recommended Posts

Ok I got a bad starting problem. My gti was a road rally car and has such had a starter button fitted to fire it you have to turn key to turn everything on then start it with button but if its been stood say over 4 hours its a nightmare to start I can hold button in can hear it trying to turn over but its just not firing i have to pump accelerator then eventually its like it will get fuel and start to fire and i have to rev it hard and if i let of throttle it'll just die i have to rev at like 3k for abit than eventually it will idle but quite rough until warm once warm it runs ok but I also have a kanagrooing going of when cruising in 5th gear at low revs but haven't got round to cleaning tb yet which i gather can cure this. Other week while trying to start i noticed smoke coming out of bonnet thought wtf  went to look and it sempt to have been coming from the k&n filter thats been fitted, also quite often if i try to fire it for too long i will get an awful sound of best i can describe as a grinding noise, i am not electrically minded when it comes to cars but does this sound like an electrical problem?

thanks for any help as its doing me head in now! and i love the gti once its running puts smile on my face

Ok, going to try decipher this.

You have a 1.6/9 8v

smoke through inlet

cant start

by the sounds of it, your "grinding sound" might be a sticker starter solenoid.

you might have a kaput fuel pump

you might have a kaput FPR

you might have leaky injectors

you might have AFM issues

you might have a dodgey ECU temp sender

you might have a coil on its way out

you might have leads which are arcing

you might have dead plugs/carbonised

you might have a dead ICV/SAD

might be a lot of problems combined! good luck! Check your compression too, engine might not be very healthy! (healthy engine should be around 195psi across all 4 cylinders, within 5psi ish)

Ohh missed that you might have an air leak.

B) yes i have a 1.6 shell gti with a 1.9 engine. Ok i will try to work through that list of things i can do 1st thing i got is some new spark plugs to try and also got another pair of ht leads that come with car look new will try them. what is icv then?

ICV on the 205 is more commonly known as the SAD (supplementary air device). Basically a cold start valve that allows extra air into the engine when it's cold to aid starting and idling. They gradually close as the car warms up. Sometimes they can be stuck open or closed causing rough running, poor idle, stalling etc. You'll find it bolted to the thermostat housing somewhere under the distributor.

A common problem. Try a search for pictures etc.

well this morning i put some new ngk spark plugs in recommended on here had 7es on end of part number i think got them from halfords also replaced the ht leads with some others that were new had double silicone on them high performance. Tried to start still same as described above when it did fire though it was popping and banging like a rally car :) misfiring quite bad i suspect also noticed the spark plugs i took had never been gapped they were massive! i gapped mine to 0.9mm as seen on here.

So what can I try next?

well since putting those ht leads on and spark plugs in it seems worse when reving now even when warm engine sometimes is cutting out trying to catch itself but just cuts out didn't do this with other plugs and leads when warm, although i have messed up that throttle stop screw, could this be affecting that?

omg how dumb am i! :P I have only gone and gapped the spark plugs to 0.09mm :D wonder if this could have been causing my idling problems.... :D

I never bother gapping new NGK plugs, they're usually fine :)

been thinking since this gti was originally a 1.6 and has had a 1.9 engine put in it, if the original afm from 1.6 was still used would this cause running problems as I understand 1.6 and 1.9 afm are very different.
