Few Teething Problems With My New 205 Gti 1.6 Help.

Hi Guys, am hoping you might be able to help...

Ive just purchased a gti 1.6 1990 and its been standing for a few years and has a few niggles that need sorting before i gt chance to enjoy it.

Firstly regarding hunting idle, fluctuates between 600 and 1200 rpm,,, throttle body clean or idle control valve.. Another part of this problem is if driving and you drop the clutch pedal, the revs just drop off and stalls, appears to have no stop to maintain idle speed... Any thoughts???

On acceleration, vehicle is very hesitate, have cleaned dizzy cap, and have new leads and plugs coming today. Anything else you can think of to check at the same time.

The ain bug bear of all is intermitant non start. 90% of the time its fine yet occaisionally key in the ignigtion, lights come on , turn the key and nothing. can here relay click and a whine from what i think is starter but doensnt crank. i thought earths as this appears to come up fairly often but the car will bump start.. Surely if this was wiring or earths it wouldnt bump.. Could starter be naked..

Your thoughts and suggestions would be much appereciated guys..

I got my GTi about 2 years ago, and had a similar problem to you. Sometimes it was a pig to start!!:o

When the engine was cold, it ran fine...and when it was warm, still OK. Would do the same as you describe when you stopped at a junction or set of lights...clutch in, engine stalls.

Did everything you have tried, but it turned out to be the air flow meter. Got one of eBay, changed it and never had anymore problems with it. :)

Hope it helps.

Just checked my old emails and cost £20 + £8 p&p, bit of a bargain when you look around...

If you find one, make sure it's for your age of car (and 1.6 not 1.9) :)
