on 1.9 8v engine - snapped just below the bracket holding it to the block  can i get the half tube out without removing the sump? couldnt see how it came out?

also the engines in the car now can i fit a new on with it in situ or is it better to take it out again? do u need to remove exhaust manifold?

cheers

the tube is just pushed into the block, if its not snapped directly where it is plugged in the block, you can still pull it out.

when fitting a new one, ensure to use some kind of sealent at the lower end or you may end with oil around this location.

doh, they do come out without removing the sump, they're just a push fit from outside the block with the one M8 bolt securing it.

you do need to remove the exhaust manifold to get a new one in, old one being broken should come out easily enough without.

not too expensive new, worth getting a dipstick at the same time if the one you've got doesn't seal too well as this does affect jetronic.

a correctly fitted dipstick tube won't come out as the exhaust manifold is in the way

with a bit, accurate bending technique you can get it to fit with the manifold fitted ;-)

its quite narrow, but its possible.

It's a tight push fit into the block, you may be lucky enough to get it out by twisting and pulling. Unles you risk breaking the new one by bending it out of shape to fit, removing the manifold is best (IMO).

May I ask how mr WP ? Ive noticed mines quite a loose fit recently and was considering putting some close fitting o rings in the dipstick's plastic recesses.

I will do this sooner rather than later now you have mentioned that

it causes an air leak into the crank case, to which is connected the breathers, which in turn are connected to the intake tract between the AFM and the throttle body.

i.e unmetered air.

same effect as forgetting to fit the bolt in the side of the intake manifold, or one of the SAD pipes leaking

Interesting thread. My friend has the same problem with an MI16 (Alloy Block)

Is the answer the same?

It is yes, though I think it may have a less pronounced effect as it has an ECU controlled Idle valve rather than a simple supplementary air device, its unmetered air.

My experience of the 1.9 MI16 is quite limited though so I can;t say for definite what direct effect it has, 8 valvers or 2.0 16v I know much better.

My dipstick tube broke a few years ago. The dipstick at the garage (pun intended) told me the reason that it broke was that I'd been pulling the dipstick out - you're not supposed to do that.

I don't use that garage anymore...
