Head Saver Shim

Recommended Posts

vickiw106

Does anyone know where I can get a head saver shim?

I took my head to have a precautionary skim and due to work done previously it’s taken it too far and the piston and valves are now slapping each other at high revs.

Another engine builder suggested a "head saver shim" where can I get one of these.

All help needed

Thanks

For looking

never heard of one of those, but with most engines you can get a thicker head gasket.

what cylinder head is it and how much was it skimmed?

what thickness gasket are you running and what cams are you running to have that much lift at TDC?

not much more we can add without some more info, over to you

I've heard of them on land rovers, but this is the first I've heard of them on the xu engines.

I always assumed it was just one of land rovers many idiosyncrasies . To be honest from what I can remember most land rover owners just get a thicker head gasket anyway. :D

Try thiss guy.He made a buitifully machined 1mm decompresion plate for me for the turbo project. If you give him a call and explain your problem to him,he will come up with a solution if there is one to be had from a head gasket perspective.

His name is Mike Tanski and he's a head gasket Guru.

we used a head saver shim on a tu5 diesel 106 at work a few weeks ago. it was supplied by the engineering company who skimmed the head so it may be worth asking your local engineering shop? it seemed to work a treat and the customer hasnt been back with any problems so far! :)

If this is just a std head, surely it must be cheaper to get a different head?!?! I'd be suprised if you had to pay more than a tenner for one and even if it needs a skim that should only cost you £20. Saves pissing about with spacers etc...

a tenner for another head? :)

You can buy a whole engine for about £50, so why pay more than a tenner for a head??

the head is a group A peugeot sport head and has hundreds of pounds spent on it before i owned the car. so therefore dont really want to put a standard head on.

Are you sure it's piston-valve contact? XU 8v's normally have massive amounts of clearance and a heavy skim alone wouldn't cause any issues...

evidently, and by nearly everyone on this forum :D

doubt you'd get any decent ported high spec head for a tenner, unless the seller really didn't have a clue...

specs in Haynes states a 0.2mm max skim to give a minimum head height of 158.73mm, though I'm sure I have heard of a lot more being removed. (dimension from 405 haynes manual, 205 manual doesnt state a head height, only a max distortion of 0.05mm)

Haven't seen Martin recently have you? ask about my pistons if you do! I miss them :)
