Shifting Problem

I have the shortend quick shift lever, bronze bushes and new bolt.

 

When i change gear the bolt is slowly loosening. If i tighten the bolt too much the lever wont move (so cannot change gear).

 

Should the bronze bushes be able to "twist" when inserterd into the lever? I say this as i had to grind my bushes down slightly to fit, but they wont twist in the hole, and think this may be the issue causing me problems.

The bushes should turn on the bolt. You should also be able to do the bolt right up till it bottoms out with the lever still able to move. You may well need to carefully file or emery cloth the bushes for them to fit as above.

Have you got the steel insert that sleeves the bolt and is slightly longer than the bushes meaning that the bolt tightens against this and the bushs still have clearance to still move.

Yes Ed, i have that sleeve. Currently the bushes wont move at all when pushed into the lever hold, so will grind them down a little more.

Did you clean out inside the quadrant and made sure you pushed the bushs all the home? possible you could push them in a bit more and this would solve it. Maybe clamp them in a vice (with soft jaws) to make sure.

And then add a touch of Loctite to the threads when you refit the bolt, should stop it coming undone

I had to squash mine in a vice to get the sleeves to fit fush. great upgeade though over the broken plastic.#
