Scored Camshaft / Head

Recommended Posts

Took the cam out of the engine I wanted to rebuild today.

Found with this:

Likely causes, oil surge?

Also what are my options?

Smooth off with wet and dry and use?

Fill in with chemical metal?

Scrap?

Luckily the cam was undamged after I cleaned it up, I guess thats as it's a harder material.

Weld it up and machine it or scrap. Looks pretty nasty really!

I won't weld it, the heads are worth basically nothing really so would rather replace it.

How far along does the cam bearing surface sit? Is that one of the outer journals? I thought the cam doesn't run all the way to the end?

It's the end one on the cambelt side.

I had this on my old Mi16 head, I think it's more due to grit / swarf in the oil than oil starvation. If it were oil starvation I think you'd see galling across the whole bearing surface rather than in one particular place. Looks like something has come in from the centre and then made it's way out to the side.
