waste of time, 205 wins. Looks, performance, everything. Mk1 and I might understand but the mk2 is an ugly oaf.

You are never going to get lots of strong feedback for VW on a 205 forum, they are very differnt cars, I don't think the Golf will be as much fun.

I had a mk2 Gti H plate twenty years ago (god I feel old) and thought it was the muts nuts.

It will be slower, dynamically weaker but better built.

I remember a mate had the 16v; I drove it a good few times. It was a long time ago but my memory is of a car that was very solid, nice to drive and comfortable, cracking little engine but felt too substantial to compare with the Pug on the twisty bits; not as sprightly on its feet. So depends what you're after I guess.

thanks so far

am 46 this yearr so not into ragging it any more, done 50 road rallies so have been and done my bit

just thought there are lots of VW shows in north west/shropshire evn NWales to bob along to and can still get a 205 fix at the road rallies I attend

just thought a bit of comfort along the way

so may have a nonsunroof Alpine White 1.9 standard dealer spec available later...

keep the thoughts coming

I would prefer a MK1, but I dont mind the MK2's I guess. My brothers MK2 felt cumbersome but it looked nice.

I like the mk2's, but as a drivers car to me there is no contest. I think the mk2's feel heavy despite them being not much heavier than a 205.

Nice, and I see the appeal but its 205 all day long for me.

I think with a few subtle tweaks they can look great

But they do suffer with tin worm as much as any other car of that vintage, and to say they dont break down is ridiculous!!

But the biggest factor for me is i couldnt live with the disgusting interior everyday!! Its bloody awful! :)

Had a F reg mk2 16v which ok wasn't the best example out there, but it needed a small patch welding for the mot, which our 205 of the same age didn't, and the rest of it seemed to be in not that good shape. Build quality was better apart from the standard issue knackered door cards. To drive it felt rather lorry like and being the 16v it needed to be revved to get it to go, but when on song it went well, but it didn't handle or corner as well as the 205 and it had heavy steering. The MFA thingy was distractingly addictive.

They are just a very different car from a 205, a lot of my mates have had numerous Mk2's of all flavours, of which I have driven quite a few of them. I occasionally think I'd like one, but the reality is that my experience and hoard of s*ite is all Peugeot (or Mini) flavour, so I stick to what I know.

What are they like for rust?

Oh, wait.

To the OP: They look nice, but for me the 'scene tax' would put me off.

have been a little swayed by my GT TDI Mk4 in that its seems bombproof even did a passing resemblance of a stage car when we had a run through Cholmondley Castle on the Tour of Cheshire Historic Road Rally whilst out marshalling this morning !

Did have a GTI Mk3 a couple of years ago I bought at auction for £300 with 6mth MOT and was a dealer part-ex they'd thrown in the ring , as a fun car but the handling was no where near fun... it fact it nearly put me off Golf GTIs for life

I'm supposed to be biased due to my origin, but in fact the answers should be:

vw

better built - yes, panel gaps are closer, but they rot

goes forever - that was the Beetle

safer - you crash, you die. You'll be just as dead as with a 205.

always starts - so does my 205

dont need to do jobs on it all the time - as long as you don't drive them

For me, MKII Golf attraction starts with a G60

I had a MK2 16v 10 years ago and thought it was a great motor,Used to take every thing I could throw at it and in the 3 years of ownership the only real outlay was for a radiator.

Wish I could say the same for my 205 !!! :P

No - sounds like a great idea - you'll have two fun cars over the summer and be able to make your own mind up based on many miles back to back comparison as opposed to merely deciding not to after listening to a chorus of entirely subjective advice. :P

The 205 is the better car IMO, but on saying that about 6 years back was in a pretty bad crash in a mk2 golf, basically it was a mate of mines car he was driving, he completely misjudged a corner flew off a 10 ft bank and into tree. Needless to say the car was totally trashed but we both walked away, I've never been so sure that would have been the case in a 205.

Very nice looking car your 205 JRL, much much better than the VW  If you could have the luxury of owning both then absolutely, why not?

I could see myself droning up and down motorways in the Golf in comfort, but on the B roads I'd rather the Pug.
