I want to get a car polisher and a random orbital sander can I get the sander and just buy polishing pads for it to save buying both?

There's an angle grinder set from halfords which has a mop and sander attachment, the speed is adjustable aswell.

Here it is!

I borrowed my mates which was brand new and managed to cut through the cable! Was not happy

A random orbirtal with polishing heads will do the job, a rotary (angle grinder stylee) will provide much more 'cut' when required.

It really depends on what the intended use is :) Upkeep of good paint = Random Orbital, Serious correction of bad paint + Upkeep and minor correction = Rotary.

A rotary is far more flexible. With a pad type and compound change it can go from a knarley beast to a very light final buffing machine. Its far easier to burn through your paint if used incorrectly though.

A well liked cheap rotary is:

or:

You will need pads (3M are the best imo) and posibly a backing plate (again 3M ~ £20)

People have been using the MacAlister random orbital from B&Q for polishing, but again a well regarded favourite is:

Shop around (google) the links I supplied are not the cheapest.

For pads and compounds 3M are the daddy, this place is cheap:
