Tapping/clicking Mi16

Recommended Posts

rob321

Hi.

My 405 Mi16 has developed quite a noisy clicking/tapping sound, it almost sounds like very loud injectors, not tappety. The noise comes at 2500rpm and seems worse on the overrun, it also does it on idle. Any ideas what may be causing this? I've searched the forums and so far my thoughts are the it could be the exhaust gasket?

Cheers, Rob.

a video of the sound might help.

also is it a 1.9 or 2.0?

does it still drive as intended?

I'll pop a video up tomorrow.

Still drives perfectly, starts fine, idles fine and is very smooth.

Cheers.

THIS thread might be of interest of a similiar (but possibly not identical) noise/symptoms on a friends 205 1.9 Mi16.

I've not yet found the solution though as I've been busy with other things - the gearbox is currently off as there was a small amount of play in the flywheel, so will address that and see if that sorts the problem or not

Try using a garage stethoscope like the doctors use to hear where the noise is coming from.

i had a very slightly bent valve that tapped, i changed 2 sets of hydrolic tappets thinking that was it!! great now with new valve!! could it be a hydrolic tappet though in your case? dont need to take head off to change but do need cam belt and cams out!! lol

take a long screwdriver/rod, place one end against the bone in front of your ear hole and closing it, and the other end on various parts of the engine (try each of the rocker cover bolts to listen across the head). You'll soon know what you're hearing if anything's bad.

my 1.9 mi was making a loud ticking noise turned out it was the exhasut manifold blowing!! but it did sound really bad.

Cheers, I will check the exh manifold soon.

Just a quick update, did a compression test today and got a consistent ~185 psi across all the cylinders. EDIT: Just realised I forgot to hold the throttle open (doh), will go again and report results.

The new test results are not good :)

1 - 202

2 - 198

3 - 185

4 - 170

Looks like I may have a bent valve.

Argh, just did it again after a drive and its reading 215 psi on cylinder number 4. I think the low reading before was given by a dying battery.
