Tough To Start

Recommended Posts

Quarryman

Each morning i find I need to hold turn the starter for a good 10/15 seconds and give the car lots of throttle to get her going. Once it fires up it's rock solid and idles lovely.

Only seems to be after the car has been sitting up for a while eg. overnight.

I had a similar fault but it when away for no reason. I tried to add a link but couldnt get it to work.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime before turn the key to the start point?

I removed the fuel feed hose to the rail after leaving the car for 12 hrs to see if there was any fuel there, just incase it was feed back to the tank or an injector was stuck open.

It could be the coil starting to break down, has the engine done a lot of milage? might also be an idea to do a compression test just to see how healthy she is.

So I'm still having this problem. I'll be bringing it into my mechanic next week. Anyone want to predict the diagnosis?

I've found that even leaving the car for 2-3 hours is still enough for it to start first time. It needs to be left overnight or all day in work before it becomes tough to start.

If i rev the nuts off it i can hear it failing to start go on all 4 cylinders but it eventually gets there.

STILL having this problem! I only drive the car once a week and usually 10-20 seconds on liberal revving seems to get it going. Seems to be a bit better now that the weather is getting a bit warmer.

Replaced the fuel pump and filter with no improvement.

was is that exactly, the coil pack? did it only happen when the engine was cold?

What exactly is it doing, as it isn't immediately clear from your description?

1) Turns over on the starter with no sign of life for several seconds, eventually spluttering into life

2) Turns over and tries to start, but won't run without throttle and keeping the starter spinning

3) Turns over and starts, but won't idle without you keeping your foot on the throttle

The initial description sounded like #1 but the one above sounds more like #2 or #3 with a potentially very different underlying cause.
