Black Box

Hi Folks

Hoping that someone can let me know what the black plastic box is that sits under the LH wiper below the plastic shroud?

It has a small pipe that is connected via a T piece to the crancase breather but it just seems to be a plastic box with no vents or drains etc.

The car seems to run with it disconnected with a small suction but it gets in the way of our fire bottle and electrics cut of pull switches so if we dont need it ?

It stores vacuum so that the sunroof will seal with the engine switched off. Pretty nifty! There should be an outlet to the sunroof seal.

Well it is connected by that one inlet to the inlet manifold via the brake servo and a 1-way valve, and is also Tee'd to the sunroof. When the engine is running, the air inside the box is effectively sucked out and the pressure inside that box is reduced to below atmospheric pressure, to the same is the inlet manifold, which can be up to -1 bar. When you switch the engine off, the 1-way valve prevents air re-entering the box so it stays at a vacuum in there. The idea being that there is a 'vacuum reservoir' if you like, so with the engine switched off it allows the sunroof seal to collapse and the sunroof still to be opened

Make sure you bloke up the pipe to the vacuum pipe on the servo, because if the 1-way valve is missing or not fitted, it will become a source of unmetered air entering the engine and it won't run very well as a result. Best to remove all the sunroof piping in the engine bay and leave the single large pipe going uninterupted from the servo to the inlet manifold.
