Where Is The Water Coming From?

Recommended Posts

gwanyerselsun

Hello there,

My car has developed a water leak from the rear of the engine block.

I have searched the forum for information on water leaks from the engine and found nothing to answer my question, so now I am asking if any of you know where the waters coming from and how should I go about sorting it?

I took a video from my phone of the leak which is here apologies in advance for the bad camera work.

All the best,

MacI

it looks like you may have a crack in the block, looking at your video, at about 15seconds in the water seams to bubble up from no where then drip down,

I hope im wrong, a better video would help but its in a very awkward place

Paul.

Looks like it's coming from the base of that head bolt, so it could be that the head gasket has gone between a water passage and a bolt hole. If so, it should be a pretty easy fix.

Thanks for the possible answers.

I will have another look tomorrow and try see exactly where the water is appearing from. I'm a complete novice at mechanics but am keen to learn. That's part of the reason I bought a gti, as it was obviously bound to break and would need fixing at some point.

Gotta love the wee s*ites though!

I had similiar thing on my 8v where water was coming out from one of the head bolts at the top and thought one day i will recon the head so went to remove

head bolts and 2 had already snapped and loose thats why water was leaking.

Turns out it's a cracked block, Oh Bugger!

Anyone got a good 1600 engine for sale?

Is the crack at the bottom of that bolt hole that requires a spacer? If so others on here seem to have made an effective repair with 'chemical metal'\epoxy resin type repairs.

Hi Ross,

There is a small crack just below and to the side of the head bolt and when we ran a pressure test on the block there were 3 places letting out water. The engine itself is also full of oil leaks and the sump is badly dented from when my friends decided to go off roading.

I'm just going to source a good 1 and replace the whole thing.

It'll give me a chance to tidy up any corrosion in the engine bay too whilst it's out.

Cheers for the advice.
