Greedy Mi16

Hi everyone,I have a 205 mi16,I filled her up last week about £45 of super unleaded, the fuel gauge is now at half a tank and i have 91 miles showing on the milometer.

Seriously!! its about 22mpg,i dont thrash it everywhere and I'm always gentle on the throttle, whats going on?

I haven't had the car very long so I'm going to give it a good service in the week to see if that helps, but any suggestions would be more than welcome.

I've checked tyre pressures and the driving is about 50:50 town:B roads

Please help me,its getting rather expensive to get to work

Cheers Lewis

hello, my mi16 205 gets about 300 miles from a tank of unleaded.

have found that it always gets worse mpg when it needs a service which is happening tomorrow.....

would try servicing and then see how it goes...

Does it cough/splutter or feel down on power at all? The gauges on our cars are notoriously inaccurate and unpredictable, it might have gone up1/4 tank by the morning.

Failing that a number of things could be causing overfuelling such as the coolant temp sensor, air flow meter or the ECU itself. I'd also check that the filler hose itself isn't corroded and spilling fuel, as these do tend to go on some cars.

it dosent feel down on power at all,but i have noticed that if i stab the throttle at idle,it does hesitate and cough a little

Sounds like a faulty ECU temp sensor which can cause overfuelling, get the car serviced first then take it from there.

As above, but don't rely on the fuel gauge being accurate it does sound quite normal.

Do another couple of tanks of fuel and work out the proper mpg.

As above a good service sounds in order first.

My GTI fuel gauge isn't accurate, it will read +/- a quater of a tank at the best of times.

A slight hesitation is to be expected when doing that, as our idle control valves are quite slow to respond so will take a moment for the engine to sort itself out. if it's properly spluttering though, I'd look into getting the AFM checked over, or see if you can try another on in it's place. Do you know if the mixture control screw on the side has been fettled with at all?

The best way to work out your MPG is to brim the tank, then drive 'til it's empty and brim it again. Then you can divide the number of miles by the number of litres you put in, and multiply by 4.55 to get MPG.

Try that and if it seems like a ridiculous figure, try replacing the ECU temp sensor.

As has been said the gauge aint the most accurate, but ours does roughly 250-275 miles on a tank depending on how it has been driven, it does nearly 100 miles on the first quarter of the gauge, and then drops like a stone.

I find if i accelerate very hard or take a sharp turn quite fast the gauge can show practically empty when in fact i have close to half a tank left, and can take up to a mile of steady driving before the gauge sorts itself out!

Same problem here on my 6, fuel gauge sensor is everywhere.

Worst is when you think you have a quarter of a tank, start booting and she dies!

Had that many times before.
