Very Dodgy Cold Starting

Hi just got a gti was road rally preped i was told it was iffy cold starting but this is really dodgy. Its got a starter button for ignition but when its been stood for say only 4 hours its being a real pain to fire when it does it sounds very lumpy and if you rev it will just die on you revs will drop and engine dies takes a good time to settle have to hold revs for abit it also sounds like it has a misfire on low revs can hear it. Anyone got a list of things i could change or try? Since this was a rally car the engine bay is quite dirty needs a good clean wonder if air leak or something somewhere, one thing I have noticed I think what is the AFM looks like its had tape put around it I have taken a pic will try to upload it asap.
