Starter Motor

Recommended Posts

My starter motor doesnt even turn over when the engine has be driven for a long time and gets hot. i have to open the hood and wait until the engine and starter motor cools down and it will start. I no its the starter motor as it doesnt even turn but i can hear the injectors working.

Any ideas what this could be before i buy a new starter motor and which one do i need to get my car is a 1991 1.9 gti as ive had a look on euro car parts and there is a range.

Any help would be good.

the problem you have here, is the starter solenoid wire, wire 46b iirc.

Its runs through the notorius brown multiplug.

dont buy a starter yet until you've checked this 1st.

It's not the injectors you can hear, it's the solenoid clicking.

Sounds like the wiring is suffering too much resistance when hot. As above, check the wiring from the solenoid back, through the manky brown plug above the gearbox. You'd probably find that when it's refusing to start, if you bridge the solenoid terminal to the starter live terminal, or run a wire from the solenoid directly to the battery positive, that it's start right away.

cheers for the advise. would it be a good idea to heat rap wiring to reduce resistance

I had exactly teh same problem

Shouldnt need to, clean the brown plug, and check the battery connections to the starter/alternator. Put new ends on if need be

If that fails get a £20.00 a used smaller later one of a gti6 or similar £20.00 odd off forum or egay.

I did that a couple of years ago and my hot starting problem has been ok since touch wood!

The rest of the the wires though that plug are for the instruments on the the dash

Oil pressure switch, long thin device on the front of the block

Oil pressure gauge, short stumpy device next to the oil pressure switch

Alternator warning light,

Oil Temperature, back of the sump

Water temperature switch, behind the dizzy

water temperature gauge, next to the water temp switch. I don't know which is which the biggest one will be the gauge.

Replace them all with new wiring. I found I had much better oil pressure when I did.

I have got this problem as well. I have the old (big body) starter motor and its the sm that is at fault.

If you hear the solenoid clicking and the starter motor does not turn over or very slowly I would say that is the problem.

If the solenoid does not click I would look at the wiring.

do you think that i could have a similar issue?

mine just starts when it wants and other time makes no attempt, but as stated by the OP the injectors do work (i can here them spray)

when it does start, sometimes its sounds ropey, sometimes not.
