Mi16 Parts Bin Mash-up

Hi, I've got a 1.9 mi16 sat in the shed and I'm looking to rebuild it for my rally car, having read the 2088cc thread I'm a bit confused as to what I should do. So, what's the ideal parts bin engine with the mi head? Gotta be n/a and ideally using only psa original parts for the bottom end (I might be able to stretch to new pistons if it's worth it!). Is it using a 2.0 iron block and rods or how about the 2.2 derv bottom end from a 406? Many thanks in advance, I've tried searching through here but can't really come up with much,

Have a look at my 2.2 engine build project in my sig.

 

It's not worth going for upped CC on an alloy block; too much expense and not enough gain. Iron block is the way for that route.

 

Plenty to learn in there. Expect a cost in the region of £2k to £3k though, as you may well need aftermarket management and forged pistons.

 

An alternative is look in the XU9 vs XU10 link also in my sig. 1.9 alloy or 2.0 iron blocks, with a bit of decking, 3-row management, fast road cam and prepared head will give you a healthy 180-190 horses, pretty much 100% standard OE parts.

 

The high CC route is quite an expensive one.

Thanks for the reply, had a trawl through the builds and there's some really interesting stuff. I'm plannning on using omex management and the head will have big valves and quite a lairy cam so I was hoping to build a more torquey bottom end from an increased cc such as the 2088cc setup. Am I right in thinking what's needed is the 2.0 iron block (s16/xsi the same?) and rods, with the mi head, pistons, and crank? Ideally I'd like to not have to do things like decking the block as it's more expense as I can't do those bits myself. One last question, is there any o/e flywheels that are lighter than the mi one that still have the trigger wheel on it? Thanks again, ad.

Yes. The 2.0 XSI/S16 even GTI6/Xsara iron blocks are pretty much identical, if not totally identical. I used an S16 block.

 

You really ought not to bother about big valves; there's a pinned topic in this forum which you'll find an interesting read. It's a bit of a means to end really, as in summary you need machining to the head to make uber high lift cams fit; and you need the cams to even approach getting the best out of the big valves. Then, as the Mi/S16 head already flows for 250bhp, you're looking at an engine on its way - normally aspirated!! - towards 300bhp, and to do that you need to rev the nuts off it (say 7500-8500 rpm) which in turn needs solid lifters and other strengthened components. The price rockets.

 

Decking a block costs f*ck all really, it's only when you overbore and get forged pistons does the price start to rise.

 

As for the flywheel, just have an Mi/S16 one lightened and balanced to the crank at the same time.

 

Bottom line is, everything you are asking is really on here already in project threads and the like, and I urge you to go and do a lot more reading and learning.

 

Wardy18 has done some interesting things with 8v engines, mixing and matching blocks and diesel cranks. Doof has a higher cc project as does BlackM116. So trust me when I say it's all in here for you.

 

Again: if you want to keep costs down, the 'Tandem Engine Build' thread, with the XU9 vs XU10 is perhaps the best way to go. Once you go down the route of upping the CC, as I said before, it starts getting expensive.
