Found 2 Spare Plugged Up Hoses On My 1.9 Eng

Recommended Posts

In the middle of a mammoth service on my 1992 1.9 Gti (non CAT) and i have come across 2 pipes that have been plugged up, by the previous owner.

What are they for?

Where should they go?

Do they need re-attaching or shall i leave them alone.

One is on the back of the std air box short blue pipe pointing towards the bulkhead it was just covered up with gaffer tape, no obvious spare pipes any where to go into it.

The other a much smaller pipe, plugged up with a bolt and hose clip!!, sat on top of the rocker cover, tucked under the spark plug tidy moulding. Again no obvious pipe to join it to or outlet stub on the engine missing a pipe.

All help gratefully received.

It looks to me like the previous owner has either:

*Removed an oil breather catch tank that was on it previously

or

*Chosen to stop crankcase vapours (naff oily gunky air) going back into the inlet tract.

It's possible that the top hose used to feed into the other hose. That's an educated guess. :)

I say this because if the top hose (plugged with bolt) goes to the cam cover, then that's the only thing it can be. It COULD actually be slightly bad for the engine, as those crankcase vapours from both the head and the block DO need to circulate to relieve pressure build up. Look up 'crankcase ventilation' or 'PCV valve' on Wiki for a clearer explanation.

But overall I wouldn't worry about it and just leave them alone if it runs fine.

2nd picture looks like the (top) water bleed screw broke and this was a way to fix it.

I could be wrong as I`ve not seen an 8v for a while.

Agreed with Simes on 2nd pic now. I can now see the cam cover oil breather on the far end of the cover, and that the hose bunged by a bolt goes to the water outlet arrowed below:

Sorry for the error; but there does seem to be quite a bit of oil splatter there on the HT leads and also a small puddle near the head bolts.

The pipe in your first picture has been modified to fit that spigot, its not there normally on any 8v 205 inlet hoses I've seen.

As it isn't normally there you can safely leave it gaffer taped up or get another pipe without it in.

Agree wth Simes on the second pipe as well.

Graham.

I'm sure the standard airbox on my phase 1 had that on the airbox too. I can't remember what it connected to.

Yeah, no idea where it goes but just looked on Miami-stus parts site & you can see that same spigot (kinda / just) on this page.

Unless it goes to pipe 5 in this page.

In the first pic, is the blue pipe actually on the air box or the pipe thats hanging off it, it looks like the outlet for the pipe to oil filler cap breater pipe thats normally on the lower air pipe that sits bewteen the afm/throttle ie is it the wrong air flow pipe.?

Its on the pipe & shown in the lower link I posted above to the parts cd, just we aren't sure where it connects to.

I agree it does look the same as the as the oil filler cap breather outlet but iirc the XU5J 105 bhp engine had the breather running to the pipe between the AFM & throttle body just the same as the later cars jjust not the small breather from on top of the throttle body to the cap.
