before ppl say "try a search" i have. so i start her up leave her on tick over for roughly 1-2 min then a sudden burst of revs up to 3000rpm then goes back to idle again? weird but why?...then she is totting along nicely untill i slow down to 2000rpm i try to move off then she wants to stall so i dip the clutch to try an build up more revs, she picks up drops again then a big burst of revs follow.im not heavy footed before ppl ask i teach ppl to drive for a living, why is she so irratic.i expect it from the missus but not my pride an joy. when she is warm its ok,i have an idea of what it might be but before i go spending time and money ill ask you guys first, most of you know wot your talkin about.cheers.

if you look to the right hand side of the engine just under the hoses and down from where the spark plug cover is....there are 3 wires. top 1 is temperature on dashboard, can't member what 2nd one down is...but the bottom 1, if its off or damaged, it thinks its cold all the time, asin -20 lol. have a peak :)

;)

Initial places to check are the throttle cable itself being damaged/frayed and suitably lubricated.

Then perhaps the connection to the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve), which if that's connected fine means the IACV itself could be malfunctioning. I say this because you say the car seems fine once warm. Check all air/breather hosing too attached to the IACV, the throttle body and the inlet system in general.

Finally it could be the ECU coolant temp sensor, which is the 2 pin connector in the thermostat housing on the side of the head. Check the connections first as Sharpy has suggested, and then consider replacing it.

That's the best order I can suggest. And may I also suggest writing 'people' and not 'ppl', as text speak isn't encouraged on this forum; that's in the rules and guidelines you agreed to.

Seems to be a few people are having issues with GTI6s recently. :)
