Jenny The Gentry

After skirting around the edges for a few weeks, I eventually joined this forum thinking I’d be in the right place to find advice, info and support. However, my new car is an Aztec Gold 205 Gentry, a model which doesn't seem too popular here, according to some of the comments I found when searching for Gentry posts: “not even a gti”, “only suitable for an old lady” and the general opinion seems to be that “..the colour is enough to put most people off…with the matching interior trim is just horrid”. Hmm… :(

Whilst I appreciate that Jenny (yes, like most females I have given my car a name!) isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, the 205 Gentry is still very much a part of the 205 legend and, as such, deserves to be respected for what it is: a classy deluxe-edition of the iconic 205 with a not-too-shabby 1.9 105bhp engine. And don’t forget, her beige interior and wood trim must have been “on-trend” when she was built, even if it isn’t to our taste now!

For the record, I have also owned and driven three 205 gti’s in the past – an E-reg 1.6 (from just 9 months old!), a G-reg 1.6 and an F-reg 1.9. These cars were fiesty, fun and fast, and I really do miss my pocket rockets. :( But now that I have some serious problems with my spine, the ride is too hard and the risks are too high. So I’ve gone for the next best thing for me at this point in time. If the medics ever sort me out I’ll be back up there with a “proper” gti, but for now it’s enough that I am still behind the wheel of a 205.

So if ever you find yourself - for reasons of health, age, finances or whatever – unable to drive or even own a 205 gti, wouldn't you rather still drive some sort of 205 than any other car?

I know I would - that's why I don't drive a Micra! ;)

I really like the Gentry and got very close to buying one a while back. I definately prefer the green one however i'm sure i could live with the biege interior - after all i did once have an STDT with the dog-poo coloured velour interior!

You will always find a bit of willy waving, its human nature. If it isnt from model to model it will be who's got the best spec of the same model, who does the best 1/4 mile, who's is the fastest around the track, who's is the shiney-st, and so on :( Its all banter really.

Most important thing is your happy with your car. ;) Theres really no need to justify your choice's on this forum, everyones pretty cool.

Other countries had Gentrys with a manual box (short Be3 - like CTI 1.9 and Euro Rallye 1.9) - they came with and without ABS and therefore with Girling or Bendix Brakes at the front or Discs or Drums at the back and 1.6 or 1.9 Subframe/Wishbones. They have been available with or without Sunroof - non Sunroof Versions from France tend to have aircon.

They all had the lower compression DFZ engine, as far as I am aware.

You see, you just can't say they where just DFZ with attached autoboxes.

Hi lion_lady_lu

I can tell you right away, im a proud Gentry owner and i love it a lot. ;)

I feel your pain thogh about the general GTI owners opinion on the Gentry since i feel like its a GTI in disguze ;)

I heard that the Gentry has higher to torque then a standard Gti. But im not sure :)

and like Gentrix sies, my Gentry has the ABS set which gives me the 1.9 suspension and breakes + its manual. The Gentry really should get more respect, truly.

Well Mark has promised me he only took it round the block to 'test' everything was screwed and bolted together right before he handed it over to me.

I am presuming this was at 30 mph mainly and possibly up to 40 mph on the road to Halfords.

It is nice to think he is very safety conscious ;)

Nothing wrong with the Gentry, nothing wrong with any 205 to be honest.

I can share your pain though as I have a 205 GTi6 with ITBs and full mapped etc, but can't current drive it (well, any car really) due to a few medical reasons (will be able to eventually though). Its a pain I know, but hopefully that 205 keeps you smiling.

Got to admit to liking the Gentry, nothing beats an auto for town traffic and its on the list of 205's I would like to own. Maybe after the CJ goes an Aztec gold with a factory roof one could be a possibility.

The Gentry was never meant to be a GTi, only a high spec 205 which the trim levels exceeded the GTi in everyway which a lazy Box and engine, As said driving round town is great.

Got to see if the old Turbo engine and box fit's next
