Nice one mate, it's good to know and I'd appreciate some help with the CTI when I start on it again in a few weeks time. I must admit that I muddle my way through most things but I don't fancy doing certain jobs on my own...like rear beams! So from what I've read from last Sunday's efforts, I may leave the rear beam till this time next year to give everyone a break from them for a while! Did it all go ok in the end?

bring it on beehatch. i have already been round the garage today and kicked the windscreen out and made a good start on digging the old filler out of the rear quarter.

also made up a nice battery clamp too, and also rewelded my wiper linkage so i can have two working ones now. busy busy busy

beams aint so bad when they are removed from the car (i cant get down on the floor anymore) and put up on a bench to do. what i do need is one of them slide hammers though, that was a trick bit of kit.

Good to hear you've done some more to yours pete surely you can get it on the road before august?

Rear beams wouldn't be to bad even on the car just aslong as your planning on rebulding it, I've had an Idea of making an attachment for my slide hammer to get these inner bearings out, just need to no the size of them and to get some thickish metal.

I have seen a different way to get the swinging arms off of the beam , instead of a slide hammer I have seen a socket/bolt that you can screw into the opersite side and drive the arms out instead of pulling them out , very quick and easy!

nice one dude, i must admit i didnt have any trouble with the bearings on mine as they pretty much fell out.

i'm hoping to get it done before then yes, it depends how much time i can get free to do it as my missus has got uni exams coming up and she needs lots of time to study.

im over there tomorrow morning and hopefully most of the day weds so i can crack on with it.

and toffo, do you mean the arms or the torsion bars? as we had no trouble with the arms on dans beam they were pulling out easily. i wouldnt mind seeing a tool for that?

Haha, Pete, this challenge willbe interesting, ill hopefully have the head back by the end of the week, the matrix will be fitted friday... bit im going to find annoying is that annoying knackerd lower mount... need to buy some oil i think! oh and the rod ends that were knackerd, what are they called so i can some of those too? I recon i can have mine back by around July....but aiming for mid june...we shall see though.

The slider is a awesome tool very useful!

By August, there will be another 3 205's restored to the road... we carry on like this we gonna see alot more GTI's on the road! that will be awesome! Glad i signed up to this forum, people just dont appreciate 205's like they should...time to show up the modern cars!

I'm lovin' this.

When I originally started this topic asking if there are any Kent members, I thought that hardly anyone around these parts loved these cars as much as me, due to the seeming distinct lack of them around.

Now the 'Anyone from Kent' thread is being used as the local guys' mini-forum with posts everyday, I can see that there will soon be more 205's on Kentish roads! Btw, it'll be good not only to see more GTI's, but also don't forget CTI's (in fact 205's from base models up LoL!)

I must admit though, I have recently been thinking (yeah, I know, that's dangerous!) about my current 205, so please bear with me while I deposit a somewhat pavement-pizza-esque literary account of my musings...

Although I really do prefer the GTI (had a couple) and don't get me wrong, I will be getting another GTI ASAP (preferably my old one or a Topaz), I do think that the CTI is the car to restore and hold onto. Reason for this is everyone either dislikes the CTI or can't be bothered with them for practicality reasons etc, etc... But I reckon the day will come when there'll be so few around that they'll overtake the GTI on the value/appeal front, because they are being shunned by a lot of people now. I'm not talking a few years, it'll probably take longer, but their day will come...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not for one second accusing anyone on this thread of the aforementioned shunning as I know that at least one of you have owned/currently own the ragtop, but you do forever see a certain amount of animosity elsewhere and on other threads toward the CTI, such as 'shame it's a CTI' etc.

I know the CTI isn't practical all year round or as a daily driver and the parts are hard/more expensive to buy, but tbh I personally would never have even a GTI as my daily grind anyways, so who cares about practicality? Inpracticality comes with the territory! That said, I know GTI's/CTI's/XS's yadayada...have been and will continue to be used as daily drivers, after all a car is built to be driven, right? I'm just saying that I'm among those that respects the marque too much to now use them for the daily commute.

Therefore, I guess my question has to be, and once again, don't think that I'm finger-pointing or tarring with the same brush here...But why is the CTI so unpopular? Anyone!?

My view is that I hate scuttle shake/the fact that they have base model susp and it's missing that lush rear quarter shape window found on the hardtop. But I also love it because it's different and I'm less likely to see another one (unlike my Saxo Lol).

What do you guys think? Any views for or against them?

PS. Keep up the hard work guys and keep posting on the thread to let the rest of the country know that the Kentish 205 scene is very much alive and kickin'!

The CTI.... well i had a 1.9.....and to be bottom line honest, i loved it! bit slow (cat model) but the MOST fun i have EVER had in a car... nothing like muching about in a CTI. my 2 problems, 1. the biggest....you look like a puff, no two ways about it, its a hairdressers car and no matter how much the diver may look, you cant avoid lookin just a little gay...and 2,they just dont look as good as the GTI's the rear end shape is warped due to the hood...I would own another one in a heart beat... i just profer the GTI's they are the real classic. Bit i cannot deny i do REALLY miss that CTI. Now in wales :(.

As for kent drivers, there are alot of us about, its just were all a lil bit weird and like hiding away, normally in the countryside lying under our fench car trying to get it back on the road, its french...most of its life you will be working under it not driving it! but when you drive it,oooooh what a buzz...when people ask me why i love them, all i can say is drive one, then you will understand my love for them!

Come on kent, we will have a nice big population of 205's were the closest to France, where they come from, we have to! Keep posting!! im sure ill see alot of you again soon when someone elses car needs work done on it! And i look forward to it!

CTi's are so under rated! I love them. My mum has had hers for the last 9 years now. I think they look awesome with the hood down.

They have the standard 205 suspension because they have a reinforced shell, ride quality and all that. I'd rather slam them on GTi suspension cause i think they look hard as nails! I'd buy one if i had the money, or just steal mums! Haha. :)

Trust me, they handle like a yacht.... absoloutley masses of fun, but really impractical, normally leak etc. must admit the gti suspension would hav improved the ride quality ten fold. Can pick up a half decent one not too much, if you can find one, oh and they have a REALLY anoying whistle on the motorway from where te hood fits onto the windscreen!

lol I'd forgoten about the roof lifting at the front at speed, it's been 2 years since I last drove mine and likely to be atleast another 1 before I do again.
