Kangarooing, Stalls When Cold + Doesn't Like Going Under 10 Mph

Recommended Posts

Car keeps Kangarooing, stalls when cold + doesn't like going under 10 mph I've tried replacing the SAD , Ecu temp sensor cleaning all the breather pipes etc, made absolutely no difference my last one was exactly the same is this a problem more common to the 1.6's?

Also replaced leads dizzy cap rotor arm changed oil and filter and spark plugs all to no avail just wont run smoothly!

Sounds like it needs a good setup. How does it idle?

Does the throttle position switch click on and off properly? Mine was similar, until the ignition was advanced slightly, and the idle speed adjusted accordingly. Made it much more driveable at low speed.

it dies when you first start it you have to keep the throttle blipped for a couple of mins slightly, and it doesn't high idle like you would expect it to when cold it just hunts and hunts around barely ticking over at all and stalls unless you catch it then until it warms up fully whenever u pull up to a junction it will stall particularly if you have the rear demister on. the only way i can get it out of my driveway is by using the handbrake and keeping my foot on the throttle.

I am at my wits end with it I've got a week off work so may force myself to go to skip browns im that desperate.

Sometimes it feels quite quick and other times just barely pulls better than a 1.1 saxo

think im just on a downer about it, first thing this morning noticed a nice big puddle sitting in the passenger footwell and 2 smaller ones in the back ( so much for the cured leak ) and then crawling through town in a traffic jam with it kangarooing and messing about all over the place and especially after the abysmal cold starting ...... frustration mounts up ........ just wanna scream at it

Sounds like the throttle position switch isn't adjusted properly. If it isn't, then the engine management doesn't know that the throttle is closed and instead bases the fuelling on the airflow meter, i.e. it won't idle well.

Have a search for +throttle +position +switch and i'm sure someone will have written a decent guide to doing it.

The quick method for the TPS is to adjust it so you can just hear it 'click' with the throttle fully shut.

Now wheres minty and phill? My shift under the arch's is over

that seems to sum mine up... mine will idle at 1000 sometimes... but most of the time it seems to be up at somewhere between 1500 & 2000...

i think i might just cart mine up to skip brown!

hmm he's just so far away from me, there must be someone down this neck of the woods who really knows how to set it up. offers?? anyone  would happily pay person who sorts it properly the going rate such as skip brown charges.

Failing that ill have a try myself B):)

I know there is a link here somewhere on someones profile to the haynes workshop manual not the crappy service and repair manual i have anyone know who's profile its on?

It really isn't that hard actually.. you just undo the two little bolts that hold the TPS to the throttle body and then (with the throttle closed) rotate it clockwise until you hear the microswitch click. You basically want it positioned so the microswitch just clicks as the throttle is closed, if you have it too far round then it will hold the throttle open, not far enough and it won't idle properly.

looking on page 4c.4 haynes service and repair manual it it the picture 10.29 "Throttle switch terminal identification?

7mm usually B)

the Haynes manual is in M@TT 's sig.

do have a read of how to set the initial throttle setting before you set the throttle switch though, its often the case that every screw adjustment is way out of tolerance, not surprising that they don't work particularly well.

also worth checking the switch actually works with a multimeter, I remember a friend going through half a dozen he'd amassed and only had one fully working example!

they really are quite simple systems in reality once you get your head around them :)

Don't use a star socket, make sure it's a proper hex socket.

so as i just touch the throttle lightly should click? Correct?

a little more than just lightly, the specified distance from the throttle stop screw to open the switch is 0.7mm, so place a 0.7mm feeler gauge there and the contacts should open, remove it and they should close.
