Main Beam Driving Lights Hell

Recommended Posts

josh

hey

a first post here so bare with me.

I've had a search around and its not thrown up anything specific to my issue.

Whenever i flick to my main beam from dipped the fogs (driving lights, whatever they are called on the 205) come on as they should, but when switching back to dipped they stick on, even when i turn all lights off, they only go off when the ignition is turned off or i pull out the relay.

Also they flick between main and dipped when they feel like it, without me touching it.

I'm thinking towards an earthing problem but some help would be much appreciated.

sounds like a faulty stalk or a dodgy relay.

ive switched the relay for the one for the heated rear which i know works, you can hear the relay click off when the ignition is switched off so im guessing not to the relay, its odd, the lights work as they should when the ignition is in the acc position just not the ON position.

ok ive discovered something new now, if my reverse lights are on, or i put my foot on the break they switch off. Does this rule out the dodgy stalk/relay?

I'm thinking some sort of earth problem now.

Has it corroded? so when another light is on its earthing through that?

I agree with your initial diagnosis - earth. most probably the blocks behind the headlight panels.

I'd check the earths for the headlights, its probably just a bad connection, they stick on like this when you turn them on with the headlights disconnected.

well i did buy him as a project, i came from a pug 106 1.1 and wanted something with more power and didn't feel like it was on jelly that wasn't going to kill my insurance.

When driving on a proper road all the problems dissapear

ok update on the problem, cleaned both earth points between both headlights (sanded all the rust and corrosion off) and still have this damn problem

i don't understand why it only does it when the ignitions in the ON position and under no other circumstances.

Helooo again

I have found the solution, i forgot to mention I have a HID kit installed, which won't allow the relay to click off.

Have just purchased a load resistor which apparently will cure the problem :)
