Question About Rear Beam Identification

Recommended Posts

millegixxer

Hello there,

first of all I want to say, that this is a great forum for a great car ;-)

so much information in one place is a treasure!

I am only registered her for a few days, and since I am currently rebuilding a 205 GTI 1,9 (1989),

which I bought as a donour car,

but is to good for doing apart,

I have some questions for the experts on here..

For the beginning I show you a pic of my "good" GTI, which I own for nearly 4 years and which is a fun to drive!

My question concerns the new one:

It is raised at the rear a whole lot, as show the following pics:

the previous owner told me, that he raised it because he wanted to do rally with it and it should go better through the bends like that !!??

but i think maybe the rearbeam was changed to a non GTI one and that could be the reason for it being that high?

what do you think?

Is there a way to identificate it?

I can say that on my first GTI the rear beam has a yellow colour and this one is black, but i am not sure if it maybe got painted..

Thanks alot for your hints and greetings from germany!

Hello! Very nice looking pair! :)

Check the thickness of the torsion bars, these will be thicker on the Gti beam and are easy to check.

A quick search will reveal lots of information about beams. Here's a good thread: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=97750

I dont think base models run ARB's (goes through the inside of the beam tube)

Those plates that the guy is holding in the pic wont be there if its a base model, in their place will be wheel hub style metal dust caps.

205 GTI tortion bars are 19mm from memory, an open ended spanner will allow you to measure. Base model bars are smaller as rich said.

It is a great forum, welcome ;)

Some base models DO run arb's. But the easiest way to check is see if the torsion bars are 19mm for a standard 205 GTI beam.

Also the GTI beam tube thickness increases towards the centre, whereas the base model will likely be the same all the way across.

As said though either identify the ARB and or Torsion bar.

Very nice cars
