Gti 1.6 Mk2 Distributor

Recommended Posts

Well after a long search that almost drove me nuts, we finally sorted out the problem on my car.. It seems that the distributor is nearly dead.. My doubt is, can I apply a 1.9 Gti distributor on my '89 1.6 Gti? Are they plug and play or is there any difference between them?

Here in Portugal is not easy to find 1.6 parts and they cost like a fortune.. Anyway, if anyone has a distributor for sale, let me know!

many thanks to you all!

Apparently no , the dizzy advance rate is pre-set different in between 1.6 and 1.9 ... it'll still work but not as good ..

The difference is in internal parts - springs and bob weights (if you can't find 1.6 dizzy over there you can swap the internals i.e. remove them from yours knackered 1.6 and fit inside 1.9 dizzy ..)

But , im pretty sure that the boys from over here have loads of 1.6 spares , and will be willing to wrap up an 1.6 dizzy and post it over to the Portugal

Well now the doubt is gone! Thanks again Damir!

The one in my car only works if totally advanced and idles at about 1500rpm's! Below that is just does not idle and is a living hell to make it roll on road! The Afm was checked, the spark plugs and leads are new, the Sad and TPS are new, the injectors are fine and i've tested two Ecu's so, by eliminating process, the only thing left is the dizzy!

One of the springs might slipped off the peg  try to dismantle the dizzy and take a look inside .. though for checking the springs it's not needed to take it apart complete , there's an aperture on the side of the dizzy body plugged with kinda oval steel plate - pop it up with the screwdriver and you'll be able to see the springs inside the dizzy while turning the dizzy shaft -> there's two of them inside , and they need to be attached on the pegs on both sides and tensed (one a bit slack and another little bit tighter ..)

But check the dizzy signal cable first if you haven't yet (the black one with yellow 3pin plug on the end) and try with some spare known good ignition amplifier (don't forget to re-apply the thermal transfer paste/jelly at the back of the amplifier prior to refitting it back as it'll overheat and burn out !)
