Hi all,

A few brake questions:

Can anyone tell me which caliper type these are? Bendix or Girling

and what type of Master Cylinder should I be looking for as this one is kinda shot...

standard Bendix 1.6 calipers, master cylinder is one for a 205

M/C is usually 20.6mm, GSF supply Bendix o.e ones for about £30+vat, same part used by a Mk2 golf.

Tks for quick answer. Poor thing is in a sorry state. Been left standing for over 2 years while I've been preoccupied with some medical stuff.

So its safe to say that I it'll probably be easiest to just replace the whole braking system.

If it has Bendix on the front am I safe to assume that the drums will be Bendix too?

Never assume anything with French brakes, they make the rules up as they go

Can I put myself forward for the muppet of the day then :D

So std MS 20.6mm

A pair of Bendix Calipers

A pair of discs 247mm (probably brembo max or something similar)

A pair of Girling Drums and matching shoes

A load of copper piping and a set of flex piping

What are the current rave pads for the above std setup?

Compensators and wheel cylinders? Can someone explain these to me please

A indicator of just how bad the state of affairs is :)

latest 'rave' pads are mintex m1144's (fast road/light track) or Ferodo DS2000's (same)

Good road pads are Ferodo premier avaible from halfords pretty cheap.

Make sure you specify a bendix matercylinder at GSF or they wil send you a cheapy one and they are sh*t aparently.

Wheel cylinders = if you can go for a known brand (bendix/lucas etc.. ). These push the rear shoes against the drum.

Compensator (s) = reduce the braking effort to the rear so you dont lock up the backs first and kill yourself. theres 1x on a 1.6 (under battery area in engine bay) and 2x on a 1.9 (under the car at the rear). These are usually buggered these days.

Handy links for you:

Might be worth rebuilding your 1.6 calipers as they have a tendancy to seize up, more so than the 1.9's girling's.

what Merlin asaid about the M/C is definitely worth doing, the proper Bendix/bosch one is only £30 odd
