Head Gasket On A Hdi Need Advice

Recommended Posts

hcmini1989

just after peoples opinions my dad bought a citroen xantia 2.0 hdi ,fetches it round and says its just had the head gasket done .so i pops the bonnet and the

header tank is full of oil and water mix :)

so ive checked the oil in the engine looks ok no water in it .and its not pressurising .

so what do you lot think

the only conclusion i can come to is he either hasnt cleaned out the system after hes done the gasket or he hasnt done it properly.

woulndt there be water in the oil in the engine aswell .or is the oil pressure higher than the water

Yea, proper engine coolant flush from a motor factor or Halfords should do the trick. You may have to wash out things like the header tank etc seperatly to do a proper job. It will probably need flushing through backwards (to the direction of normal flow) to get it properly clean, several times!

cheers will pop down to the factors and get some

headgaskets can leak in all manner of ways, most commonly from the bores into a water way, though sometimes between bores, from oilways out to the side, oil into waterways and no loss of compression.

no sure-fire rule to the symptoms and causes!

leaking oil-water heat exchangers can make for a nice brown frothy mix in the coolant with no ill effects on the oil system as the oil is at a higher pressure than the coolant most of the time.

yeah i thought about the heat exchanger but couldnt see one in there and the coolant is a sh**y brown coulor i will flush it out and see how it goes

They sit between the oil filter and the block, I haven't come across a pug TD engine that hasn't had one yet!

pull the pipes off it and bypass the unit, then flush the cooling system thoroughly, see how it goes

As already said,i would have thought it would be an oil cooler.

I looked at a HDI expert van for a friend with suspected headgasket failiure,i said how uncommon it is for HDI head gaskets to fail,i said that i have seeen several oil coolers split on XUD's so i told him to get oil cooler pressure tested, turned out thats all it was,not bad considering he payed £200 for the van thinking it needed a head gasket

well ive had a look properly todeay and it has had the head done so will bypass the the exchanger and block it up then flush it ,and the car was stupidly cheap

As said never took a head off of one of the hdi engines yet, even when the belt snaps its normally just a few rocker arms, brilliant engines.

I'll buck the trend here, I've had a HDi head gasket fail on me in my old 206. Replaced it myself, it had gone between the combustion chamber and a coolant passage and was pressurising the cooling system to stupid pressures. The car only had 40k miles on it. Head had to have quite a lot skimmed off it as the high pressure gases had started to cut into the head!

I took a load of pictures as I did it for those who are interested.
