Could be the starter, could be wiring.

This has been covered in depth countless times over the years - please do a search.

When i turn the key i just get a clicking, take it the starter motor it buggered?

I have the same problem, i finished a rally yesterday and when i got home i went to start the car on the trailer and just got clicking. I had a look to day and the clicking is coming from whats looks like two green relays. I pulled them from the connectors and the pins looked dirty so i cleaned them but i'am not sure how to clean the connectors. I put them back on the connectors and tried again but no joy. After looking at the archives on here i will now check out the rest of the wires an connections, then move on to the starter. The reason i,ve replied to this is i had no history of this problem be for, but we did push the car in gear with the ign off when the bolt on the gear linkages came of when we were in the middle of a stage. How ever the car still started all right after. Also we did notice a lot of oiley smoke from the starter area which lasted for about two or three mins, but the car still started. We then went on and did seven stages with no problems, loaded car on trailer and when we got home found this problem. Any one got any advise please.

both of these issues will probably be down to high resistance / poor connections to the starter solonoid wire.

oil everywhere is going to increase the resistance issues further.

Would suggest you clean all the oil off and see if you still have the issues.

If you do, please do a search for clicking starter as anthony suggested, there are fairly well written posts on how to rewire the existing set up to bypass a notorious multiplug that will probably be corroded away.

Thanks mate i did the search and your right we had an oil leak around the area so i will carry out the tests. Getting a spare starter just in case.

Mine used to do that when the car was used hard & got hot.

We gave the starter a whack one day & it's been fine since!

I went to sort the problem today but first i had a go at starting it again. The little b****r turned over and fired up first time. The problem started last Sat so i assume by leaving it for a week the oil had run off the motor. I'am sure now it was oil that caused it as there was some on the motor. I've now cleaned every thing up and she starts a treat. Got to find the bloody oil leak now!
