Exhaust Manifold Leaking

Recommended Posts

evojay71

After changing the motor in my 1900 I can't seem to stop the exhaust manifold from blowing,I have a road rally tomorrow night and need to sort something quickly,is there anything I can use that could cure it?? And yes I have used new gaskets.

If you've done the bolts up tight enough, maybe it has a small buckle somewhere. All I can suggest is gasket sealant paste or trying to use 2 gaskets at once.

Havn't really said where its blowing from, although from what you've written I assume you mean the head-manifold join. Did you clean both surfaces up properly, and made sure all the gaskets were on the correct way?

Leaking from the head, the studs are as tight as I can do them and am I right in saying the gaskets only go one way as they wont line up with the ports if on back to front. I did clean the manifold surface prior to refitting but I may try doubling up on the gaskets if I can get a set???

Gaskets do only line up one way, if you've done it the wrong way they will leak as far as I know.

All gaskets line up with the ports,I did fit a 4 branch manifold and had the same trouble with that also this week which is why I went back to the cast manifold and still the same!! ;)

Maybe its not the exhaust then, maybe the head surface has a gouge, isnt flat or isnt clean.

Begining to think it isn't flat,I know the surface was clean and didn't notice any marks in it either.

i had a blowing manifold and fitting a gasket and using silicon sealant worked a treat, i know sounds like a daft idea but some of the rally boys i know use silicon all the time for this propose, give it a go... :)

We've used silicone before on our exhaust too, some people swear by it.

I personally prefer exhaust paste although thats nasty stuff if you get the hardening stuff.

I've heard of using silicone sealant too, but I swear by Loctite 5920 which is an orange coloured, professional product and does the job nicely.

Halfords sell it; it's about £6 for a tube which lasts a lifetime.

You need to run the engine up soon after fitting it though, as it uses heat to expand. Either that or waft a butane lamp over it to get a good seal.

Did you use oe or aftermarket gaskets?

Only time I've had issues with a manifold gasket blowing after fitting was because I used after market gaskets & tbh for the price difference I'd pick oe everytime.

Same goes for the downpipe / manifold ring.

Graham.
