Really Slow Windscreen Wipers!

Recommended Posts

mikebullock84

well went for a bit of drive round a few back lanes tonight, was sleeting, and my vision was crap. How much is a new motor from pug, or are the ones from gsf loads cheaper? or do i ebay for a bargin, but it could be slower than what ive got!

-this must be a common thing about 205s??

May be the motor or the wiper spindles seizing in the plastic mountings. Mine barely moved and I found that the spindles were utterly welded to the plastic! Three hours trying to free them wasn't worth it!

On the other hand the motors are getting pretty elderly. I know that a lot of people swap them for a pug 106 one which is meant to help quite a bit.

il take the plastic cover off on the wknd and see what the linkages are like, and spray a load of wd40 in there! mine is 1988 aswell, doubt the motor has ever been changed, and prob on its last legs, so is a 106 gti version a straight swap?

I think so, but you'd need someone with a better knowledge than me to tell you for sure. I hate to use the line 'try a search' but there's quite a bit on this topic if I recall.

Pop the ball joints off the bottom of the spindles and see how free they are. If they're really stiff, then the motor will probably be ok. My neighbour had some good results with lithium grease sprayed on to the spindles of his ford galaxy when he had the same problem.

Im doing this tomorrow, refurbed the motor (106 jobbie) as per m@tts guide already, but I was un-aware I had to do anything to the wiring.

Is it a case of just swapping the plastic part of the multiplug? Or do I have to move wires around too?

Quick info on this much appreacited coz like I said im doing this early tomorrow morn ;)

I cannot recommend RainX enough as well. I have been up the motorway in torrential rain at over 70 without the wipers on. It is great when you pass a truck and get stuck in all the spray. It also makes deicing on winter mornings easy too.

Get the yellow RainX not the pink Rain Wizard

After an insane searching session, in another thread you stated you used a 306 motor which needs the plug modding. 106 ones are apparently a stright swap ;)

Refurbed 106 jobbbie on :) (is indeed a stright swap), but still not as fast as I would like. Can anyone tell me off the top of their head where the earth is?

Cheers

Aaah - thats what I thought  .

But if you picture the motor from the top, imagine the motor spline protruding out the top, the motor spline rotates a full 360 deg clockwise from its 'off' position (anticlockwise if looking from underneath!!). With the motor attached to the car, and imagining the motor spline from the top is a clock, and wiper linkage bolted onto it is a clock hand, my wiper linkages were set at 6'oclock in the 'off' position. At 6 O'clock, the motor, when turned on still pushed the wiper linkages towards the offside (left) (looking from front of the car) between 6'oclcok and 9'oclock -causing wiper blades to go down 1/2 a sweep. Between 9o'clock and 3o'clock, the motor spline pushes the linkages towards the nearside (right) - causing the wipers blades to up the screen. Ad infinatum.

Therefore, with my motor 'off', there was still movement in the linkages both left and right when the wipers were turned 'on', ie. down and then up from the resting position. Methinks wipers should only move up from the resting position, then back down to it, not past it ;) .

As you suggested, without adjusting the motor spline and linkage, the only way to adjust the wipers would be to adjust the wiper arms on their individual splines. But, doing that without moving the wiper motor spline meant that the wiper blades had to be positioned in the centre of my windscreen in the 'off' position, as they went down from 'off' and then back up - not good for driving B) !!!!

Therefore, to fix, I had to make sure that in the 'off' position the linkages were either at 3o'clock in the 'off' position (ie maximum movement towards offside) resulting in the blades being at their maximum downsweep position when 'off'. Fine adjustment can then be made with the wiper splines to suit.

Good luck with the refurb :D

Chris Mi, cheers for your post on the position of the motor arm at 3 o clock, when fitting my 106 wiper motor sat afternoon, it really got my head in a spin, as my wipers were going down first and then up a little and basically was a right pickle! i had visions of the 106 motor i bought off ebay was knackered! argh!

But setting them back at the 3 o clock setting saved the day, and all is well. So to round up, i fitted a 106 motor, which shares the same plug, fitted new bosch wipers, and rain x on the glass, so im fully prepared for the next storm! ha! like MerlinGTI has wrote, its not as fast as say my golf v6, but its definatly a great improvement! cheers all!

Holy thread ressurection!

Can anyone answer the above? I've fitted a Saxo motor to my 205 coz of slow wipers, made no difference so the old one was obviously fine!!!

From the posts above looks like an earthing issue - where should I look for the earths?

(starter motor also seems to suffer from earthing issues so it may be a wider problem!!)

I would say take the linkages apart and grease them up first, I did this during my rebuild now my wipers work really well, don't even slow down at 80

And nearly three years on I've still not bloody sorted this!!! Primarily because I only really use it on sunny days and do few miles in it!!

Need to sort out the earths - never got a definitive answer to where the earth for the wiper motor is located, anyone know? Or is it best just to cut into the wiring and fit a new earth?

Ta :)

Hi Everybody. I'm bringing back this topic because today i sorted out the problem with my front windscreen wiper. It was slow, slugish and made an awfull sound. I Tried everything and nothing seemed to work, until today.

I went to the scrapyard shops to look for a used motor, i tried one from a peugeot 106/Saxo but it was damaged.

Then i found one from a 1994 Peugeot 306, and as my last resource i tried it. ¡IT WORKED! It was a Straight fit, connector was the same as my 205 GTI, just installed it same as the old one and everything worked fine. My wipers now work perfect. They are fast in both speeds, no clunk sounds of any kind.

If you have this problem, my recommedation is to get one from a Peugeot 306/Saxo/106 (it's the same) and you should note the diference right away.

The main diference with the original one are the internal gears from the 306 motor, they are much smaller, thus leading to a much more fast movement of the wipers. I hope this helps everybody who had the same problem. I'm completely satisfied with this result. ¿The cost? I'm in Colombia, but doing the math, it was about 40 pounds the used motor.

Greetings to all.
