Buy Standard Discs Or Vented?

Hello forum members,

I am sorting my car at the minute and thinking brand new discs and pads all round.

My car is a standard 205 1.9 gti and is used for a daily drive.

What to do?

Do i buy standard discs and pads all round?

Or do i buy vented discs all round?

Is there any difference between standard set up and the vented set up?

I do know that vented discs cool better and brake better.

What would you do and prices please on where to get them from?

Errrr... standard 1.9 GTi front disks *are* vented (rears are solid)

 

Are you refering to drilled and/or grooved disks rather than vented?

 

For what it's worth, standard vented disks have always been just fine for me used on both road and track

As standard the fronts are 247mm vented and rear disks 247mm solid which is perfectly adequate. Places like GSF stock them, if you do a search you'll find lots of topics on various pad compounds such as mintex 1144's etc.

Grooved and drilled discs are not really needed with todays pad materials. In the past, some pad materials had a tendency to glaze over when hot, and also produce gasses. Holes and grooves were a way to help solve these problems by deglazing pads and allowing gasses to dissipate. Standard discs (i.e. not drilled or grooved) will do the trick. Strangely enough I seem to remember buying 'Brake Engineering' disks from the motor factors recently, which were £25 for a pair of rears, and £20 for pair of the fronts. I run standard disks on my rally car - will defiantly be fine for road use.
