Converting Standerd Dampers To Coilovers

I, personally, would use an uprated insert or uprated shock altogether as using the std insert with much harder springs will result in a very bouncy ride...i.e. the shock is not matched to the spring

 

Its a good post though...the one about DIY coilovers !

IIRC the coil-over kits can be done a couple or three ways , they usually use the Escort 40mm inserts albeit the Peugeot are 41mm and are propper expensive ...

 

Firstly why do you want to convert to Coil-overs ? If its for adjustment fine ...

 

My Advise would be to Buy some Standard Platform GP N Yellow Billies and some 180lb springs ..

I have made such a conversion a month ago with my Bilstein race-dampers (40mm inserts)

and the result is quite good. The Bilstein dampers have 52,4mm outer diameter and the

tube i have used has 52mm inner diameter.

 

The whole work was finished in two hours !!

Just a couple of questions....why did you use 2x short H&R springs, what i.d. are these & what poundage ?

 

Also, where is it you get these kits from ?

It is also available in UK for less money :

But with shipping to Austria where i come from it costs in the

end the same as at timms-autoteile

 

The springs on the picture are 25N/mm helpersprings

and 100N/mm mainsprings.

 

25N/mm....140pounds/inch

100N/mm...550pounds/inch

 

The car is for autoslalom use only.

You don't want to go too high on the spring rate, as the damper will not cope with any significant increase over the standard rate.

What is the standard gti-6 spring rate as I want to do this conversion and want to order springs and don't want them to be too hard for dampers.
