Strange 1.9 Front Brakes?

Recommended Posts

fatony1

My mate at work has had a few GTIs and he said he's never seen little brackets fitted to the hubs like this. They were removed from my 1.9 H reg GTI.

The brackets look like they are designed to move the caliper out to fit larger discs, is this the case? Or is this the standard setup?

Anyone have any ideas?

Looks like the Constella kit designed to run bigger discs, It's not standard.

Appears that might be the case, i've just checked the old discs i was about to bin, and they're 283mm, is that GTI6 size? :D:angry:

Also, what exactly is the point of standard calipers with bigger discs? Surely the caliper piston size and pad braking surface remains the same?

283mm is GTi6/180/307HDi size yes.

Yes the pad surface etc stays the same, but the pad is grabbing the discs at a different point, changing the leverage effectively. Like the difference between using a ratchet handle and a breaker bar!

Take it braking would be even better with GTI6 calipers though? Still got those VTS ones for sale mate?

P.s - I will drop those springs off soon!

These adaptors for the standard calipers were popular a few years ago- when the 306 GTI6 was still quite a new car, so brake setups were hard to get hold of. These days its arguably easier just to bolt the 306 bits on, and get the larger pad area to boot.
