Cylinder Head Identification...

Recommended Posts

Bally123

Hi recently sourced a low milage 1.9 DFZ engine (from a Gentry) , looking to fit a DKZ or D6B head to get the performance up. How do I tell the difference between the variants? (i.e. casting marks?, other external differences in castings?)

I'd love to hear from anyone who has built this type of motor before...

Any other points I need to be aware of? (cam specs, valve size etc...)

Sorry if this has been covered before but the relevant posts I found didn't seem to mention easy identification between units.(maybe its just not that easy?:))

Thanks for all your help

We have lots of DFZ's in Australia. A common is upgrade is to fit the smaller chamber head. I don't think you can tell the difference in heads from the outside. Essentially, all 1.6L and 1.9L heads are the same (except DFZ), other than the very early 1.6L head. My summary for 205's goes like this:

large chamber, small valves 105mm long (DFZ)

small chamber, small valves 108mm long (early 1.6L GTi)

small chamber, large valves 108mm long (1.6L and 1.9L)

and of course the SRi head

The DFZ cam is also fairly tame at 218 deg. @ 0.050" and 0.405" lift.

Probably worth going to an XU10 head for bigger valves than the standard GTI heads. Needs a good skim though from what I hear

Apologies for the hijack, but what is the code for the 405 SRi Head?

Thanks for all the replies, forum to the rescue again!

Good job regards links to the photo's, although I seem to have some issues with the 8vcmashaft photo, only gets too 67% loaded??

Anyway at least I am clearer on what I want (later big valve, small chamber head inc camshaft), I will check at build time but any ideas on the approximate CR I am likely to get???

I guess it puts me into 98 ron territory as a minimum (but hopefully I wont need anymore than the high octane pump fuel)

The XU10 is an interesting option I had not considered, I guess the std 1.9 head is more bolt on so maybe easier, I'll bear it in mind though...

Thanks Guys

Bally
