Help Needed Removing Driveshaft

Recommended Posts

stuart1298

I've got an old XM 2.0 8v Turbo auto, the engine is ready to come out, all except the poxy inner drive shaft, i cant remove it from the gearbox/mount bearing, i've tried everything, the 2 holding bolts are undone, i've tried to unbolt the complete engine mount, but there is one bolt behind the shaft, so thats not working, i've tried a slide hammer, to pull it out, hammer and chisel on the bearing, there is not enough space to remove the engine and box complete, i have no electric at my garage, so i cant take an angle grinder to the shaft, the box is hanging of as i've unbolted it from the engine and the torque converter has been unbolted, any one got any ideas, or is it looking like cutting the shaft with a hack saw??

and help or ideas would be good cheers stu

If they are out of the way then you just need to hit it harder, sometimes they do get pretty stuck.

Could you not just remove the front subframe from the XM and drop the engine and gearbox complete out of the bottom? Once the engine is on the ground, it should be easy enough to remove the gearbox even with the shaft stuck in place.

(I've not actually worked on an XM so I'm not sure on the subframe setup on them and thus how easy it is to remove and drop the engine out of the bottom, but certainly this method works on other PSA cars just fine)

we were using a club hammer, lol, short of a sledge hammer cantget much bigger, but not space for a sledge hammer,

havent looked into removing the subframe, might have to bulid my arms up and use a hack saw!

Could you not just smack the outer end of the driveshaft with your club hammer (hitting in the opposite way to what you want it to go) This could break up any rust/oxidization thats around the bearing/housing allowing it to be pulled out freely?

P.S when you starting a progress blog?

why don't you undo the cv boot and split the driveshaft , leave the stuck piece in there , take engine + box out, remove box and then slamm the shaft out.

As foreiginer said, if the shaft is scrap anyway I would just release the gaitor. I had to do this the other week on a gti6, and even when the engine was removed it wouldn't seperate.

cant take the engine out as the shaft goes through the mount then in to the box, so cant serperate the box-engine..

Lots of heat on the housing for the bearing, tap it with a hammer and balljoint seperator wedged in there and bobs your uncle!

I have done it, you just undo all the bolts on the gearbox and take it off the engine and shaft will stay on the engine

remove the engine mount then you can get a chisle up between the shaft and the mount and hammer it up and it will separated them. had to do this many a time on stuck shafts.

If all else fails, smash the area of the alloy casting around the intermediate bearing with a lump hammer.

the shaft is in the way of one of the bolts, cant get on to it with anything

i'll try a chiesel/prybar inbetween the mount and shaft aswell as some heat on the bearing, fingers crossed this will do the job

Why don't you do as already said and seperate the shaft at the inner CVJ, the section that runs across the back of the engine into the gearbox, is no longer an issue as it's within the same dimensions as the engine, so engine and box are free to come out.
