Water Leak

Recommended Posts

Evening all.

My 205 GTI managed to get through about a litre of water in the space of 4 miles on Thursday night, leaving me stranded at the side of the road with steam coming from under the car until the recovery truck driver arrived. "Ah, I thought it was you" he said on arrival. It was the same guy who helped me last week when the car refused start. I felt a bit of a tw@t but he seemed OK about it being a bit of a fan of the 205 GTI, and gave me and the car a lift home.

Anyway, I managed to get under the car today and it looks like the fat hose which goes to the front of the block just above the sump is weaping from the jubilee clip when the system is pressurised. I traced this back up to the oil filler. This surely is not correct - its all a bit cramped under the inlet manifold, have I missed something?

Until I can get hold of my jack, it is quite difficult to see underneath.

Thanks

Lee.

That's an oil breather pipe - not related to the cooling system at all

The usual one to split in my experience is the small L-shaped one to the right of the thermostat, normally on the inside of the bend. Otherwise, fill it with water and run it upto temperature and see where water/steam comes from.

I think I have a leak from that exact pipe. I seem to be losing alot of water and i've topped up the expansion tank about 4 times now.

I looked in the haynes though and the L shape seems to be connected to a cone shape which they claim is something to do with a vacuum ?

Anyway it did look like water was coming from that L shaped pipe, is this a part I need to get from Peugeot, or is it a generic pipe ?

Do you have a part number ?

Just had another look and i'm pretty sure thats an air pipe for the dizzy vacuum, that's the only L shaped pipe I can find in that area though...

Sorry if i've hijacked the thread...

Well i've found the source of my leak, it was near the thermostat, one of the hoses had become loose. I re-fitted it and it seems more secure now.

Ive got the breather cap and the intake pipe that sits just before the throttle body in the sink at the minute, soaking in hot water. So hopefully when I fit it all back in tommorow it will run smoothly :)

Hijacked the thread, and sorts out his problem... I have just found the head is cracked strait across the front under the inlet manifold. Started the car and hey presto water seaping out and running down the block and dripping off the sump. Grrr.

Cannot beleive how much bad luck I seem to be having. Only completed a full head re-build 100 miles ago.. and have the Nurburgring booked on April the 9th...

You're sure the head is cracked?

I've got a water leak from the inlet manifold gasket at the moment (... see the thread titled 'inlet manifold' here) because I didn't use a proper gasket.

Same symptoms as yours.

This seems like an unlikely coincidence. Are you certain the head is cracked?

Obviously you used a new head gasket, did you use new head bolts? Did you torque them down correctly?

Also check the inlet manifold waterway as per the linked post above.

Yes, 100% sure. I will get a pic later. Directly under the manifold it is bone dry, then about an inch further there is a clear crack about 6 inches across the head. Intially it just looked like scoring, but you can feel the ridge with a screwdriver. Dried it all out, started the car and you can clearly se water seaping out the long crack. My only suspisions are that the engineering place had to take quite a bit off the head when it was skimmed, presumably due to it being very warped from the HGF.

Yes all new bolts, headset, and torque tightened as per Puma Race Engines website.

"sorry.

No worries, me too.

A new reasonable quality head should be available on here. If not a scrap yard xu10j2 head is a nice upgrade. Hopefully the test and skim should not cost too much, and you're okay to rebuild it. Also the gasket is fine to reuse. Granted though. Terrible hassle. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but if a spacer is missed from the head bolt near the thermostat housing, this can puncture. The water jacket.

1.9 heads on here are like chlamydia; everywhere apparently. 2.0 xu10 head would need a new inlet too as the ports are a different shape. This cracked head situation sounds seriously bad and I can only speculate wildly as to why something this random has happened.happened. Typed like an amateur on my phone at an airport.

Right guys after closer inspection, with the afm and manifold out the way, it is the front of the block that has cracked, about 6" across. New engine it is. I can only assume that when it was parked up for a week in this frozen cold weather, that the mixture of the coolant has frozen despite having about 3 litres of anti-freeze in from the head rebuild a few weeks ago.
