Metal Strip Jammed Into Aux Belt - 306 Hdi

Recommended Posts

Had an interesting one today! Wife comes in saying the car is making a funny noise.... On closer inspection, there is a strip of metal jammed between the engine, top aux pulley and the belt.

This is the strip of metal I pulled out...

The car seems fine now, but where did it come from? Any ideas, Do aux pulleys, have a metal outer on a plastic pulley? Or is it part of the bottom pulley?

Any ideas? I was supposed to be tweeking the 205, not playing with the family wagon!

:) .doesnt look to healthy mate .id pull the belt off and check it allso all the pulleys.never realy done much on the 306 hdi .but i have done alot on 406 hid`s taxi`s mainly and they had a habbit of chewing auxilery belts and we`normally find them rapped around the timing belt so id pull it off and check its ok and check all the pulleys .

on the plus side when they do and rap around the timing belt they never bent any valves ever and ive done hundereds .they usualy snap the rocker

allso is the bottom pulley making any noise as thats most likely where thats come from

Thanks for the replys!!

Hasnt been replaced, that i'm aware of!

From further reading it seems like its the crank pulley that spat the metal strip out!!

Question is, ok use the car for a couple of days??? Just local stuff?

I wouldn't even start it if it has come from the crank pulley, its very common for bits of the pulley to damage the timing belt and cause a lot of damage.

I think the bits have come out already!!! So is the pulley going to fall apart now?

Anyway... its a little too late for not starting it.... Wife has already take it to Tescos and back! Humm... I dont think it will be going any further after your comments!!

Had the same on a 406 hdi - it was the crank pulley. I did drive it for a further 20 odd miles though after I first found the metal bits, with no ill effects.

mine did that, exact same strip of metel, didnt think much of it so still drove it for at least couple of weeks, about 600miles until it started making a knockin noise then realised what was wrong

i replaced the timing belt not long after (it was due) and didnt notice any damage

probably not reckomended but i got away with it
